Can someone give me an idea of what this area is like after 12 AM? I'll be heading to the M room soon next weekend and would like to hear about how safe that area is. Can I get a cab after the bar closes?

I used to walk home from that station at all hours of the night when I lived nearby and never had any trouble. Like El said, though, there were never very many people around, but I never really saw anybody any more suspicious than a homeless person wrapped in a blanked sleeping in a doorway or alley.

It's not a bad area there. My advice is to just stay on the big streets like Girard,Frankford etc..It's probably not the best idea to walk down small dim lit blocks at that hour of the night, but that applies to just about anywhere.I've been in that area late many times and never had any problems.Just be streetsmart.

Like somebody said - just be streetsmart. If you look like you're supposed to be there, you wouldn't be at any greater risk to be hassled. That said, calling it "Girard & Front" is a tip-off you don't know the area. Certain intersections are always said in a particular order, like Front & Girard, K & A (Kensington & Allegheny)., any number street & blank (like 5th and Girard, never Girard and 5th, for instance). Might sound stupid, then again might make for an interesting thread - proper native Phila. names for locales.

Yeah...Girard and Front...instant tip off..
It's like putting the name before the number...Walnut and 22nd is incorrect. The area used to be rough. Not so much anymore. Just watch for groups of teenagers...they tend to be the issue down there. You may want to call for a cab. Don't remember there being cabs driving by. Again, stay on the main streets and within earshot/view of others...the area is still "up and coming" and is maybe a tad bit sketchier than Fairmount.

Man...I say "Front at Girard"...so it's clear I'M not from the neighborhood. I say "the 76," a Buffalo New Yorkism. No worries. It grates on me everytime someone says my home city with the incorrect accent, too. (Rochester).

Like Kensington and Allegheny or Broad and Pattison or 13th and Market or Grant and the Boulevard. There's little logic. Maybe the last example of spoken tradition. Throwing the numbered street last is a dead giveaway. It's like walking around NYC looking up.
