There are just under 100 Rows, Townhouses and Condos in the Fishtown & Kensington area- zipcode 19125,

Only house is listed as a Condo- but it looks like it's reall a regular row house.

I talked with John McDonald the other day and they (he and his brothers - Tim and another name which escapes me) are going to selling some of the project they are completing in Fishtown. They had previously done the meat packing plant in Northern Liberties (or maybe it was a freezing plant).

Tim, who teaches architecture at Temple, has usually done pretty neat things in the three buildings that I know he has done. He also owns the architectural gallery that was on Market Street (where Metropolitan Bakery is now) and then moved to Northern Liberties (don't know if it still exists).

Damn, I don't seem to know much tonight. Anyway, if any of you know Tim McDonald, check with him because I also don't know where his Fishtown project is. :what:

It's called "Rag Flats" and it's on Berks Street b/w Thompson and Belgrade. It's a cool project - loft apts in a former rag factory, with several trinities and apartments built in an interior courtyard between Berks and Montgomery. Those guys are a good bunch, and their project should turn out very good. They do almost all of thier own work (design, build), so they've been at it over there for over a year now.

That's the one - and you're right, they're good guys.

Tim is a really inovative architect - teaches architecture at Temple and his students do really good projects like outdoor stages for festivals, etc. They first did the building on Market that currently houses Metropolitan Bakery (they were able to save and incredible number of the old architectural details while creating the store and three or four floor-through apartments. All are up for sale now including the retail space - a retail condo.

Next was the project in Northern Liberties which I've never seen but has seen written up glowingly. Then, Tim bought the place on Berks and we all thought he was crazy . . . I guess he was, like a fox.

And, you're right, they do their own work and from what I have seen and heard from a friend who lived in the Market Street property, it's all high quality work.

Plus Tim and his wife, at least, live in Fishtown. So go patronize your own and buy up those properties.

I've seen this--it's taken them awhile, huh? Does anyone know what they're doing with the demolition of the burned former candy store/drug front?

Dang! Still don't have this quote thing down. Oh well.

Anyway, the "Candy Store" is being replaced with a coffee house with upscale apartments above. Not sure if they will sell Arctic Splash, though.[/quote]

To eldondre. The rag factory used to make rags for industrial operations, (Machine shops, foundries, etc.). An interesting(I think) aside, when I was a kid back in the early `60s, I have vivid memories of many vendors plying their trade on Norris St. The man who sold rags was one of the most colorful. His cart was festooned with hundreds of pieces of wildly colored cloth. His song, which I try to recreate occasionally to friends with my off-key croak still lies in the back of my nostalgic thoughts. Who would buy rags? Well, you have to realize that the Fishtown of my youth was not the Fishtown of today. It was, if not a poor neighborhood, then a lower middle-class one, and you wore you clothes until you grew out of them, then they were handed down to your siblings, who wore them until they were not good enough for rag use. So a few pennies for a bundle of rags was not a bad deal.

The former pickle factory at Lehigh & Edgemont is also scheduled to be converted to lofts, but I believe they will be rentals.
