Are they in fact closing? Nothing I have read in this thread indicates that they are closing, but rather that the current owners want out. Anyone know anything more? I need to know if I should start planning my last evenings with Larry McKenna, Bootsie Barnes, Mickey Roker, et al. over at Ortliebs. I sure hope not!

Yes , this is what I want to lnow. And by the way, it's LARRY McKenna, the greatest Tenor Sax player in the city and one of the best alive.

The building to the south of the turn down structure has been under renovation for a while; I drive past almost daily. They ARE moving forward. I especially like the look of the balconies installed on the front (3rd St side) of the building. I'd be interested in installing the same in some of our planned projects.

Nothing has occured in the torn down area between that building and Ortleib's for quite a while.

Thanks for setting me straight, Geno. For some reason, I combined Larry McKenna and John Swanna into one name! I should know better, since I have some of their albums... :o

That is a relief. I thought the building being sold meant that they would close down and reopen as another sort of restaurant.

I really dig Larry, Bootsie and the other Philly jazz legends who play there. My guitar teacher plays gigs with Larry McKenna and John Swana. I've been thinking about taking my guitar down there for one of their late nite jam sessions or open mics...

Hopefully I will still have that opportunity at some point...

To stop the demo, the woman literally had to run outside and throw herself in front of the bull dozers while calling the police on her cell phone. The demo company was supposed to do all of the usual things prior to starting like underpin walls, etc, but did not.

The result is that a large portion of their first floor wall is buckling and there is now a gaping hole along the roof on the north wall of the building. The owners of this building had been renovating slowly themselves to create a large studio and apartments for themselves and a few starving artists from NYC.

All that was put on hold. Litigation ensued and has been finally completed. The demo contractor didn't even want to repair the damage they caused, which started the whole fiasco. Anyway, they were found liable and once the payout and repairs are made, I think demo will ensue (after underpinning etc).
Glad to hear they were found liable and are being made to pay. There is justice after all.

Anyone have $2 million bucks they can spare me? I'd buy the place in a heartbeat just to keep it open.

Ahh the memories. 30 years ago a buddy of mine's Father used to keep 4 cases at all times out on his porch. Every couple of nights we would steal 2 cans from the bottom, then replace them from the top on sunday mornings. Got away with that all summer

I'm going this evening. I'll see if I can find out what the Jazz Club's future is.
