You all seem to spend a lot of time on this internet thing, so I suppose sometimes your computers go belly up. Does anyone know some one in the local area who can make my lap top stop torturing me.

Well it takes five minutes to boot up, it runs very slowly and it doesn't like to shut down. A couple of days ago it was fine. I figured I should do something sooner rather than later. I ran a virus scan and had some viruses but they were "quaratined" so I figured I was good. I'm going to try some anti spyware stuff, but thats the limit to my knowledge

Do you ever back up your important files to CD or other storage media, such as external hard drives?

Do you have the restore CD that came with the laptop? Or do you have the operating system install CD?

The easiest thing to fix things, if you continue having problems, is pop in the CD to restore the laptop, wipe the old partition, and install everything nice and fresh. You will have a machine humming along as if it were new in about an hour or so, depending on the OS, the processor, etc.

Edit:
Yes, spyware/adware/malware are the big things to watch for. Have you added any programs recently? Updated any programs?

When is the last time you ran defrag? When is the last time you ran Scandisk? Is this a PC, a Mac, or *nix?

I was infected with a spyware (winfixer)that caused all those symptoms and my spyware detectors and virus scan were not able to clean it. I found somthing called vundofix on a teck board and out of desperation downloaded it and ran it and it cleaned me up great. Google it. My computer is like new again.

Also do you defragment on a regular basis?

Honestly, I have not had any personal experience with this guy, but he's local (in No Libs) and his prices are very reasonable.
