Hal, do you know what connection, if any, there is with London's Kensington? And, while we're at it, how about Mayfair and Bristol? Did the colonists just start using names of their former hometowns when they got here?

Broke or not, I will not brook Brooke’s babbling, even if it’s about babbling brooks.

(Sorry, too much coffee today...)

Just a guess, but Kensington in London is just upriver from the City, right? Then further up, Richmond. Same thing here. Right from the start, Philly was looking to be another London. And it was, sort of, for a while.

Actually, yes, they did just use familiar names in most cases. It happens all along the East Coast. And if you do the research, most of the earliest inhabitants of a given town were from that region of England. Almost all of the towns around Boston were named after towns in the region of England most Puritans originated from. David Hackett Fischer's book, Albion's Seed, goes into the four main colonial regions and explains how traditions (place names, architecture, clothes, etc.) and such were brought over...very big, but very interesting.

DId anyone notice that the apartment buildings around Rittenhouse Sqsuare are named after famous London hotels? Savoy, Dorchester, Regency, Claridge, etc.

Actually Clinton is the official name. "Hell's Kitchen" is the nickname first used as a perjorative and now used by yuppies who live there to say "we're tough". Clinton also works well since it is right next to the neighborhood of Chelsea.

Yet, ironically, the neighborhood Chelsea is pretty.
