You can get on the El at either Berks/Front or at Girard and Front. I drive to the Girard Station and park because I don't think walking across the school and the vacant El Mercado lot at night is particularly safe when it's dark out. It's not really paved either in the El Mercado lot so it's a pain...

I am a late riser and a late worker so I don't know how packed it really gets but I generally take the 8:30-8:45 in the morning and 6:15-7pm at night and it's busier when I take it in the morning but nothing like NYC's. It's pretty dead at night.

When it starts to be light again at 7pm, I'll start taking the Berks Street station again.

The 25 bus will drop you right at the Spring Garden El Stop. It is like 800 times safer then walking around the Berks Station.

Good info, yatesy. Where do you pick up the 25 bus? Memphis? Of course, then you have to pay for the transfer or get a weekly, right?

I think the 5 will take you to Girard, too?

looking at the septa site for the 25 and 5 bus schedules: each bus only has about 5-6 listed stops along the way. are you able to pick up the buses at other points along the way too? taken the subway/regional rail many times, but never taken a setpa bus! thanks,

chris

You can pick up the 5 and 25 anywhere along the route, they just list the major stops where a ton of people usually will get on and off. Just find the closest stop listed to where you are getting on and add a minute or two. Always better to be early with Septa then late.

FYI

the 25 Bus Follows Frankford Avenue until it reaches Norris Street where it turns onto Cedar going toward Pt. Richmond (ARAMINGO AVENUE)

Coming back into the neighborhood it follows Memphis until it reaches Palmer Street (At the Cemetary) where it turns onto Palmer and then continues along Frankford Ave, Turns onto Delaware, does this little turn onto Fairmount, stops at Spring Garden Station and heads on Delaware AKA Christopher Columbus Blvd. and stops at Walmart

The 5 Bus travels 3rd Street through Northern Liberties to Girard Ave. (With the funky little stop at Spring Garden Street) where it continues until it hits Frankford where it turns (Stops at Johnny Brendas) and travels Frankford all the way to The Bridge and Pratt El Stop.

Coming back into the neighborhood it follows Frankford to Girard, Girard to 4th and then through Northern Liberties, (Stopping at Spring Garden El Stop), and continuing through to South Philly

The 15 Bus, soon to be trolley is also an option it travels the length of Girard Avenue and then Richmond Street from Pt. Richmond Street to 63rd and Girard.

You can catch this at point all over the Ave, and Richmond Street, as well as from Broad and Girard, (SUBWAY STOP)

Hope this helps,

Now that the Berks Station has been redone, can't they punch a hole thru the wall on Front St. so it connects to Fishtown? This remnant of the Trenton terminal is a blight on the 'hood. The school there doesn't help, either--it's another barrier. At least El Mercado is doing some landscaping, making the area at least a little less ominous.
