Hey All Philly Bloggers,
Just started browsing this site and I love it. I am going down to the electric factory for the Talib Kweli concert tomorrow night and I'm looking to hit up some bars before hand. I dont really know any good bars around that area besides Finnigans,McFaddens, and Tiki Bobs. Can anyone give some insight to places within safe walking distance? Thanks JKov |

"good" is rather subjective. The bars you mentioned are the only ones of their kind in the neighborhood. With that said, the question for me would be, "are there any bad bars in the neighborhood?" so far I haven't found them. anyways, if it's a nice night you might want to check out the standard tap at 2nd & Poplar? I forget. they have a nice deck though. ministry is cool. so is the Ababye (3rd & Fairmount), North third (3rd & Brown), Ortlieb's (Third & Poplar), Druid's Keep (100 block of brown bet 2nd and 95), Ministry (Poplar just east of fifth). Standard Tap, etc. there are also a couple of bars on 2nd nearby...Liberties and the 700 club (which you might like best). they are 2nd and fairmount.

I've heard Ortlieb's is pretty cool if you like jazz... I've been meaning to check that place out one of these days...

you can check out silk city on 5th & spring garden st. (the bar side) if you want some quite time and don't feel like dealing with all those people on 2nd street, you can park and then walk to silk from electric fac. they open around 7:30pm

(i don't live in northern liberties, but) since you're going to the electric factory (i've heard kweli is great live), silk city is probably your best bet. it's closest to EF out of nolibs' best bars. i usually start my evening there if i'm going to an EF show. post-show, you might check out ortlieb's for jazz or 700 club for dancing. (actually i don't know if they have a DJ on thursday nights, but i would imagine they do.)
standard tap is good ... north 3rd is good ... ministry is good ... oh, and -- actually, there's a place called whiskey dix in the same building as electric factory (on the 7th street side), but the crowd is kind of finnigan's wake-y. have fun at the show.

I am partial to Liberties myself. I think it all depends on the atmosphere you are looking for prior to going to the Electric Factory. Those places you mentioned are more along the lines of a club/bar. Liberties goes for more of a local bar feel. It gives you a chance to get some food (I like their boneless wings) and have a few drinks. Nice atmosphere but on the small side. Again, it depends on what you are looking for.
btw, it is located on second street between fairmount and brown i believe. Statue of liberty out front |
