My point is all races do idiotic things. I've seen Asian youth raise hell where I grew up in University City. Black youth do their share of terror and I'm sure white youth are no angels either.

The question is whether groups of minority teens pose a threat in Philadelphia. They do. In Fairmount especially. One should not be blamed for having a hightened sense of alarm when such a group is within close proximity to you. It is unfortunate for anyone to think this way; it is also necessary.

i agree, but its difficult as a black male to hear Vortex say they are not surprised they were black teens without it striking a nerve.

It should strike a nerve. When my wife goes to a checkout line out here and the cashier puts the window up in Spanish it strikes a nerve with her.
I would rather be branded a racist and not walk through a group of minority youth or get on an airplane with "arab looking" men. It should strike a nerve. Black youth go through White yuppie enclaves for a reason. Chances of having a gun or being chased down are hair thin. Right or wrong, this is what is happening.

The other day i was listening to terry gross on npr interviewing the london police chief. the interview took place just a few days ago. anyway, at one point terry gross asked the guy whether he approved, encouraged, or discouraged "profiling," as in racial profiling?
the guy did not understand. then she qualified it and called it "racial profiling." he still did not get it. she had no choice but to go into detail to explain to him what racial profiling is. the guy answered as delicately as possible, in order not to offend her, but it was clear that this was not standard practice in the UK, that is, to asume that similarly looking people all behave the same. the guy tried to soften his answer in order not to bring attention to the premise of her questioning which by london's standards (and many others in his eyes) was quite provincial. ...sigh... why can't we all get along?

See if Fresh Air w/ Terry Gross was done in say Billings, Montana instead of the increasingly gentrifying streets of Philadelphia. She would've never asked such a racist question.
People, please don't read too much into this post. |
