Talkradio should buy a newspaper, there was a big ceremony for the Iroquois and it was covered in the newspaper and on TV.

Yes. There was a ceremony. But prior to that there was little publicity. It was a fait accompli, and now we are stuck with that monstrosity.

I'm sure they'll be happy to check with you next time, seeing as you're obviously an art lover.

I don't recall anyone asking me about the Rocky statue, either. But I got over it.

Actually, I do appreciate art, but I lose patience with so called art no more sophisticated than Erector Set constructions by 10 year olds.

That Rocky does not compare well to David is beside the point. It does have a distinct and hugely popular connection to Philadelphia which Iroquois surely does not. Furthermore Rocky is generally pleasing and readily understood by the public. Generally pleasing that is. Apparently, brooklyncat, your art sensitivites are far more highly refined than that of most locals and the flocks of tourists that pose with Rocky, not with Iroquois.

Actually...sculpters like DiSuvero and Shemi designed many of their sculptures to be climbed on, so that the viewer could become part of the art, and view the sculpture from many different angles. It was also an opportunity to have the art become a part of the viewer.

Obviously there are safety issues, and this particular sculpture may not have been designed to climb, but it's an interesting concept.

I wonder what makes people fear this sculpture? Is it the color? If we painted the Calder sculptures or the Rocky statue bright red, would they be shunned too? Would the DiSuvero go unnoticed if it was brown? Maybe that's the point.

I think it's just because it's abstract. That upsets people. They need art to look like a thing, a kitten or a person, so they can say, hey, that looks just like a real kitten!

if they have to work any harder than that it is too alienating.

I would not be surprised if this sculpture was designed to be climbed on, although probably not swung on.
