Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

I agree... Kelliann's cranberry and goat cheese salads are good, cheap and hearty. We take out salad's from here all the time. the food in general is good and affordable.

They used to have a jazz band play there one night a week but I don't know what happened. Personally, I'd rather play the jukebox instead of listening to two dudes with guitars playing james taylor all night.

You guys notice that no one ever mentions Westy's (16th & Callowhill)? I've never been but was wondering about it. Is it that bad or do we all forget it's there?

OK, I've been there....not in a long time but it was part of the after work rotation when I worked at Four Seasons. It was a decent place from what I remember, on the lines of McGlinchy's in terms of price and decor but not nearly as crowded. Off the beaten path for sure but not Ghetto believe or not. More Hipster if that's what your into.

Serious musicians only, please, not ersatz frat boys who butcher the songs I like and play waaaaay to many I don't.

The last thing I want with a decent beer in a good pub is anyone whining their way through bad pop of the 80s/90s. Nothing kills a mood faster than a dweeb on a stool, tuned to E Ab D# G Qb X#, twanging along to the moldies....

Just put the (satellite) radio on.

The jazz at Kelliann's was Sunday nights. They also had, what sounded like,
country, on one weekday night.

Since I live right across the street from Kellianns, I DON'T miss the music.
I had to create a "white nose" situation to block it out when
I needed to get to sleep.

Agreed. Although, nothing impresses me more than someone who can play a good X# chord.

I work at the Daily News, and Westy's is right across from our back entrance. People tell me it used to be a newspaper hangout, but not so much anymore, I guess.

I went there for dinner once because I didn't think I had time to go anywhere farther away, and that seriously was the nastiest open-face turkey sandwich I have ever eaten. In the top 10 of nastiest sandwiches of any kind. I would not recommend it for the food or atmosphere, it had a pretty standard lager price.

That said, welcome to the neighborhood! I live like two blocks away from you!

The 17 Spot on 17th and Fairmount is really friendly and cheap and one time a woman at the bar gave my boyfriend and I an awesome lecture about how we should have safe sex while we were waiting to get takeout beer (important information: 17 Spot has cheap takeout beer).

It's not really like the Fishtown bars you mentioned at all. But it's fun and does have pool tables.

Havent been to Westy's since last years football season, but they had good beer specials during the Iggles games. Food is just typical fried premade frozen crap. It is a good place to watch the game though with a couple of pool tables.

Also a DailyNews/Inquirer employee here...Westys still gets a decent crowd of post work people, but not as much in the summer I'd say...The fries with bacon and cheese are good, as are the wings but I would stick to that kind of fare....I liked Stephen's Green the one time I was there.Read soemwhere that that area is rapidly gentrifying but it still seems hit or miss to me....Have not been in Kelliann's in years...What happened to that Maker's Local place? Is that still open or is it gone?
