At most two TVs. Guess it's silly to only hook up one to the system, but I don't watch much downstairs. I *do* tape (yes, tape) shows on both TVs, allowing me to record two different channels at the same time and watch a third if I'm really compulsive. Been thinking of replacing the pure VCR recorder with a DVD recorder/player, but think it's probably overkill to replace both units. Once in a while I want to watch some old rented video.

The two TVs are hooked up to a roof antenae via coax coming down to the basement, up to the first floor, and into a splitter which allows connection to the first floor TV and more cable running up to the second floor thru the same hole used by the heat riser pipes, and then over to the second floor TV. If it sounds inelegant, it is. Does having the two TVs on different floors complicate the Direct TV installation? Do they handle all of it (and charge extra?).

I currently have Verizon phone and DSL internet service. I don't know anything about Dish or Direct TV service, installation, features, costs, reliability, etc. I'd like to get the least expensive service provided I get Animal Planet and a few other channels (maybe it's not a few, but I don't need 150, or on demand, etc).

I have two old TVs, in working order, but neither digital or HDef. Does that make a difference to the installation? I don't even know if they are so old that a new service can be connected to them. I'm toying with the idea of replacing one with a small flat screen, and it would of course be digital (I've got one converter box, but so far have found it's more trouble than it's worth.. at least I can't make it work consistently). Since the TVs are still working fine and all I want are the extra channels, can I delay the purchase until necessary and just get the new service or will their age complicate the installation?

Any advice one way or the other about the services, installations, TVS (recommendations for small flat screen would be helpful too. If I'm satisfied watching a 19" tv across the room from my bed, I really don't need a 50" screen) would be very much appreciated. Personal experiences especially helpful. Start from the beginning. I've become technologically obsolete :{

If you or someone in your house watches the NFL then get Directv, if not then you get Dish Network

You should definitely be able to get a better deal through the Verizon bundle. Eventually, I expect they'll be offering FIOS service in our area, and that'll include TV and internet and phone service, too.

Instead of a DVD recorder thing, you might also consider replacing that VCR with a TIVO-like device (also called a PVR (personal video recorder) or DVR (digital video recorder)). I think you can get one from DirecTV (probably for a few more bucks per month), or from elsewhere.

To TVandSports guy: No NFL watching for the most part in this house. You're the only one so far to suggest Dish over Direct TV. Any particular reason?

To Netnerd:I figured someone would suggest TIVO. What is this TIVO-like device? Never heard of it. How does it differ from TIVo and what would be the advantages? I can see my monthly charges mounting as we speak, but after being confined to bed all day and nearly losing my mind trying to find anything to watch, I was about ready to call Verizon and say "give it to me tomorrow".

That promise of FIOS hinges on the definition of "eventually". I've heard from someone in the suburbs that it is great, but I don't think it's going to reach Philly for quite a few years. Doesn't it require digging up streets to install?

I had them both, I had DISH for many years then when I went with HD, they had problems!!! They claim software. I had to switch to DIRECTV I have them now for 2 years. I'm sure by now Dish has corrected the problem. I do think Directv has more HD channels. Picture qulity is the same. Go with who ever gives you the better deal as a new customer.

I don't think we will see VIOS for many, many years. Comcast won't let it happen in Philly

I don't know if they charge more for multiple sets (the dish itself does cost a little more, but I can't remember how much), but DirecTV has always been good on installation - they make it painless and quick.

Just thinking about DirecTV gives me an anxiety attack. We're with Dish now. And happy.

The Verizon bundle savings is a bunch of bunk, btw. You get shittie internet speed for an outrageous price and they sell you a lot of landline services that you don't need and will never use.

I want everyone at DirecTV to get poison ivy. On their genitals.

It is not a good story!!! And it's long, and exhausting for me. I'll need cocktails and lots of ciggies.
