OK, it looks like the first project to go forward will be at the Poplar Street Bridge. Once that gets started they hope to leverage it in to funds for other areas, such as 29th and Girard.
Tim with the CDC said they will be engaging the Streets Department to help replace the stolen bridge railing with something to either match what was taken or something newer to fit with the renovation. They may also talk to them about calming that intersection with crosswalks or a narrowing of the street. The bridge itself may be updated with art, and the area around it may be improved to make it more of a "gateway," both to the park from the neighborhood and to the neighborhood from the park. Now that the first location has been chosen he next step is to move forward with community-based design. I think Al Alston stood up to ruin a perfectly good point that he made by following it with an inappropriately-timed anti-Rita's message... Last edited by CityMaps : 06-27-2008 at 02:13 PM. |

The next events for the Poplar Street Bridge Public Art Project are coming up. From the Fairmount CDC:
The goal is to upgrade the Poplar Street Bridge area with public art, create neighborhood identity and ultimately create a gateway and safer connection to Fairmount Park. Already the bridge has been cleaned and patched! More improvements are being planned. The sessions will be held at (the future coffee shop at 30th and Girard) Please join us for one or both of these sessions: Friday, October 3rd, 5:30 – 7:00 pm Community Update Meeting Our facilitator, Milenko Matanovic, will meet with community members to review ideas developed by neighbors over the summer, choose a preferred direction and set the stage for the final design workshop. (*light dinner will be provided) Sunday, October 5th, 1:00 – 2:00 pm Open House / Exhibit All community members are invited to see final proposed designs and hear about next steps. Thank you for all of your input and participation. Please feel free to pass this information along to other Fairmount / Brewerytown residents. All are welcome! Please RSVP to Ayaka Hales at 215-685-0729 or aya.hales@muralarts.org. |
