Default What is the Smell in the Air?

Can anyone tell me what I'm smelling tonight? Is that ozone?

Ok, I'm really glad this isn't just me. Several times over the last few weeks I've walked outside and the air has smelled... hot. Like melting plastic, or something?

I also have no idea what it is.

Believe it or not, it's actually a forrest fire on the North Carolina / Virginia border. We noticed it very strongly in Cape May last weekend and then heard it that evening on the news. This weekend CBS3 was saying that the smoke was making it as far north as Philly. I caught a whiff of it this morning in the grocery store parking lot. Whenever the winds shift to South we get it a little...

Yep - very strong in South Jersey over the weekend, too. Ozone is an entirely different experience.

Are you sure? I was in Cape May last weekend too, and the smell (and sight!) was nothing like burning plastic. It was more like a sweet pine fire smell. i think you may be smelling something else...

The smell in Cape May last weekend (and Philly this weekend) was indeed a forrest fire. See my post below.

I smelled that burning plastic smell on my way to work this morning. I thought maybe someone's brakes blew out somewhere...

Yeah, I still really don't think you are smelling the forest fire. As I said, I was in Cape May the first day the Carolina fire was really bad there and you could SEE and smell the smoke...it was definitely a forest fire smell and not at all like burning plastic.

The forest fire smell might have reached this far (although the visible smoke has not been anything like what we had at the shore 2 weekends ago) but the smells here may just be "typical" summer-in-the-city smells.

Now, about the taste of the water...
