Default Art Museum Tunnel closed

Anyone know why the tunnel is currently closed? It was temporarily blocked off a few days ago, then it opened again, now there are "road closed" signs blocking it off. I assume it might have to do with the construction at the end of the SG street bridge, but does anyone have more info? Such as when it will be open again?

Is this new path going to cross West River Drive at that point? Or will they somehow tunnel under it?

ISTM it will be a hazard for the runners and bikes etc - people come flying up the drive at that point (well they fly on the drives anyway, don't you zur? LOL)...

If it crosses at street level there will have to be a light there to make it safe. I'd rather see that than have a tunnel.

there was supposed to be lights..

but then the city removed them...

and said "wait for the entire Parkway overhaul coming soon"

Ya know... you can just "ask" people there.

You cant just throw traffic signals up everywhere you want because of "safety". Bikers and runners alike should turn off the ipod and dismount their bike in order to cross the street or if you are that concerned about crossing the street go up to the light in the middle of the bridge and cross there. A yield sign and pavement markings cost $500; traffic signals start at 800k.

Oh and Mr. bike rider, get a helmet on. With gas prices these days, everyone is riding a bike and no one is wearing helmets. If you run into my car and go over your handlebars and crack your head open. I wont have any sympathy for you.

1) There has never been a safe way for pedestrians to get from CC to West Philly across the Spring Garden St Bridge. Every possible route involves crossing the traffic lanes illegally at some point.

2) There is already a light in the middle of the bridge at the ramps for 76. It's been there for decades.

3) Cars never yield properly at Yield signs. They barely stop for red lights at this point (hence the rise of red light cameras).

4) Traffic coming out of the tunnel under the Parkway has always caused problems, especially at evening rush hour, when the sun shines directly down the tunnel and blinds the drivers.

5) Get your car out of the bike lane, use your turn signals and follow the traffic laws and you won't have to worry about cyclists running into your car.

6) A helmet isn't required by law in PA; it should be, but it isn't (and yes, I wear one).

why is that? the last thing we need to have is cops writing more tickets for things that affect no one but the adult making the decision.
as for cars, I was almost run over by a driver determined to make the light and followed a truck turning eastbound onto 76 from broad st. As I was crossing, the truck came too close to me as it was, then a car swung around and almost hit me because he couldn't see around the truck. When I used to live up there it was an almost daily occurrence as drivers had almost no respect for pedestrians and I'd love to see the broad st entrance to 676 eliminated. I'd also love to see the art museum tunnel used for a trolley some day and taken out of car use.

The safety (or lack thereof) of that particular crossing has absolutely nothing to do with distracted bikers wearing iPods. There is *no* safe way to get from the far side of the W. River Drive bridge to the side where the entrance to the lower Schuylkill trail is. It's a blind corner and cars come very fast around it. The volume of traffic is high as well. The problem is that this is a logical crossover point for the two parts of the trail, so a lot of people, myself included, cross here. But it makes me very nervous. Someone's going to get creamed here sooner or later.
