Really? I've never noticed those signs. I ride in the road (eastbound) from Falls Bridge to the Art Museum pretty regularly after work - like say, 6-7pm. Doesn't seem to be much of a problem around that time, but the morning rush would be a different story, as there is *much* more eastbound car traffic then.

Seems like the original poster believes that anyone who doesn't use the path as she does or doesn't use it the way that she wants them to is selfish. Isn't it ironic, don't ya think?

Complaining about walkers and runners using the path is ridiculous, in my humble opinion.

There's signs on MLK headed west re: rush hours, and I thought I saw one on Kelly but it was a while ago since I avoid that side now.

I've seen the signs prohibiting bikes from the road during rush hour; I've seen them recently and on the Kelly Drive side.

I stay on the MLK side, where it is safer from other people exercising, but it might not be as safe from people with bad intent.
Hey - when is the road closed on the MLK side? I usually ride on Kelly Drive on Sundays, but I believe MLK is closed off then?

MLK (West River Drive) is closed to car traffic 4/1 to 10/31 from 9-5 on Sats & Suns.

Also closed when there's a parade at the Art Museum Circle since traffic can't get through there, and for lots of other events at the Circle.

I'm sometimes a runner and sometimes a cyclist. I've always thought that the dirt/gravel path is meant for those on foot and the paved one is intended for those on wheels, where there are two paths. Then, obviously, where there's only one path, everyone has to share.

(I know that sometimes when training for a race it can be good to run on a harder surface to get used to it, so those runners ought to use the paved path, but a lot of people who are out on Kelly Drive are just on leisurely walks.)

I suggest that all cyclists get bells on their bikes. When I didn't have one, I had to yell a lot to alert people; it really ruined my mood and I don't think the pedestrians liked it either. A bell keeps me in a better mood, and it seems to be more effective for alerting those I am passing.

I have one request: when I (or any other cyclist) shouts "On your left!" at you, please do not stop and turn around.

I'm fine with kids and slow-moving walkers/cyclists/joggers/whatever so long as they keep right.

I'm not fine with people who walk four abreast or cyclists who ride side-by-side.

I would like to thank all the people on Kelly Drive for making my ride so enjoyable. The concentration that I put forth to maneuver from the Art Museum to Falls Bridge must help make me a much smarter person. I am now able to read dogs minds as well as the simple person just out for a walk. I didn’t realize it was my responsibility to pay attention to your dog taking up the whole path and running in front of me while trying to get too the peacefulness of the Wissahickon Park.. You should at least keep your dog on the outside of you when you’re enjoying the path that was created for everybody. As for the walkers here’s an idea look behind you before turning around. This way you won’t have to worry about me crashing into you, sometimes my mind reading skills are a little slow. I just hope these same selfish people don’t drive like they use the path
Cyclists are just one group of users of the "Recreational Trail" on Kelly Dr. Cyclists need to proceed at a speed which is safe for them and everybody else, and they need to use a warning device which can be heard over the headphones/earplugs worn by walkers, runners, and cyclists. While using the trail everyone needs to be more aware of their surroundings and cooperate including cyclists on "their" ride. To those who use it to commute to work, it's still a "Recreational Trail" and not the Kelly Expressway.

If you shout as a Harley is going by or while someone is listening to someone death metal on their iPod you won't be heard. Also while you may shout "On your left", they may have heard something different and turned around to find out what it is. This is why a warning device is better. A loud bell or a good whistle.
