Default Missing stars

When walking back from the park along 27th I pass a house with two service stars in the window.

Today when I passed the service stars were gone and two folded American flags in triangular cases were in the window.

I don't know how I stand on the war, or that it really matters.

I wish I could knock on your door and tell you thank you for making the ultimate sacrafice. Your family is in my prayers and our nation is forever in your debt.

Wow. That is sobering. Those two represent many more like them. If it were me, I might just leave anonymous flowers. Breaks my heart.

Well, by having family members serve they are making a sacrifice, but not "the ultimate sacrifice." According to the DOD, the city hasn't lost a soldier since October '07.

I'd be happy if this was a mistake, but this was very recent

The assumption that these flags represented recent war causalities was likely erroneous. Such folded flags are often given to relatives at the funeral of a past serviceman. A folded flag was given to my mother when my father, an ex-soldier, died in his sixties.

In fact, another nearby house on the 2700 block of Brown Street also has a similar display of two folded, glass encased flags in its front window. Plaques beneath them read the names and service dates of those individuals – not their deaths.

It is not surprising that these are on display with the recent passage of Memorial Day and the coming of the Fourth of July. This is the patriotic season in America. The house first mentioned on 27th Street also has red, white and blue ribbons on its door.

And while they probably do not represent a war causality (fortunately) they do represent a lot of pride of someone’s past service to this country. And we should honor that as well.

...
Except Tenzo noted that the folded flags replaced two service stars, which typically indicate a family member (or members) in active service:

I hope you are right.
I'll look more closely

Hopefully everyone is home safe and the flags are memorials from WWII services.

Sorry, to jump to a ill informed conclusion and this is one time I'm glad to be wrong.
