The assumption that these flags represented recent war causalities was likely erroneous. Such folded flags are often given to relatives at the funeral of a past serviceman. A folded flag was given to my mother when my father, an ex-soldier, died in his sixties.
In fact, another nearby house on the 2700 block of Brown Street also has a similar display of two folded, glass encased flags in its front window. Plaques beneath them read the names and service dates of those individuals – not their deaths. It is not surprising that these are on display with the recent passage of Memorial Day and the coming of the Fourth of July. This is the patriotic season in America. The house first mentioned on 27th Street also has red, white and blue ribbons on its door. And while they probably do not represent a war causality (fortunately) they do represent a lot of pride of someone’s past service to this country. And we should honor that as well. |
