just got home from work (about 1 am). some dude outside my apartment. he said something to me so i just started sprinting. he yelled hey man relax, im a student from delaware as i was runnign away. i went through the back entrance. i gues ive gotten held up enough in my life to run as soon as they even look in your direction. anyway, i swore i read some stuff on here about a guy claiming to be a student from delaware. anyone heard anything?
wondering if i should call the police. |

If it was a short, stocky African-American male with facial hair, then it's probably the same guy who's tried the "I'm a student from Delaware" thing three times with me down on Green. Last week my boyfriend spotted him trying a similar story on a scared girl on our block and told him off. The girl ran away, looking grateful; the guy got really pissed and started screaming. I haven't seen him around here since, though.
I haven't heard any cases where he was violent; just irritating. |

Simon and Proudest are right. he was going to try and con you.
Yes, call the police. If nothing else the constant stops by police may make him move to another location for awhile.

I heard the same story from a couple friends who live in the area and got stopped by someone who was posing as a U of Del student. Avoid him and yes, call the cops. I have a couple cop acquaintances who work in our district and tell me they have no problem stopping suspicious characters and questioning during their patrol around the neighborhood.
Also, last year, friends who live in the neighborhood and myself have had run ins with a Caucasian guy dressed in a suit and posing as an Architect. His scam is that he needs cab money to go to his office in Old City for his spare house keys because he locked his current set in his house and he left his unattended child alone. I ran into this guy twice in one year trying to scam me with the same story. Once was really late at night over on 20th & Arch during the Winter. The other time was over by Whole Foods during the day in the Spring. |

The architect guy has been around for a while; he's mentioned in most of the Where We Are forums. Hate to be heartless, but there is a high probability in this city (or most cities) that the person coming up to you with a sob story needing money is scamming you. |

You're not being heartless. A person truly in need would contact a friend/relative or, worst case scenario, contact the police for advice. Never ever give to these scumbags.

Yeah, I was approached by a black man around 21st and Fairmount last summer claiming to be a college professor with a daughter who lives in the area. I think he wanted bus money or something. That was in the daylight.
Also got approached by a black woman on 22nd and Spring Garden who had some sob story about locking her keys in car nearby. I offered to call 911 for her and got away quickly. It was late at night and I wasn't taking any chances. Again, I hate to be heartless, but at least 90% of the time when someone approaches you in the city, they are probably scams. I'd disappear quickly too when it's dark out, and can't blame the OP for going in the back door -- good move so they don't know where you live. I once read that Ted Bundy often used a crutch or an arm sling to get women to help him carry stuff to his car. Better safe than sorry. |

A couple of weeks ago, I walked to A+, and on my way past the parking lot on fairmount ave, A twenty something(maybe?) aged man stopped me and asked if I was from philly. He claimed he didn't know his way around.
He went on to tell me how he was from Delaware and his sister has been dating a white male for a few years and that night she discovered he'd been cheating on her. He claimed the two got into a fight at Urban Saloon and that police came and threatened to tow her car. (He claimed the officer said he didn't like Jersey tags in his city). Then he said they just needed gas money so that they could move her car so it wouldnt get towed. AND THEN he said that he needed bus money because he didn't want to walk all the way to Oak Lane. ![]() Ok...dude is from delaware, his sister is from jersey, yet he needs to go to Oak Lane, what? |
