I live around the corner. Here's what we've been told. It was an attempt on a woman unloading groceries (same M.O. as the one earlier this week a few blocks away). Guy pulls up in an SUV, ask her something, gets out of the car and pulls a gun on her. She screamed and the guy fled.

Here is what happened - after a woman walked into her house and put down a bag, she turned around and had a gun pointed to her in her living room and was told to keep her mouth shut. She tried to get away, he pushed her, knocked her down and again put the gun to her neck and told her to shut up. She proceeded to scream several names and he calmly turned around, walked out the door and drove away.

He did not say anything to her until he was in her living room and then all that was said was to keep her mouth shut.

The description is a large black male, in mid to late 30s, over 6 feet tall, driving a black SUV with either DE or MD plates.

He had driven up Ogden, saw her enter the house, reversed down Ogden, parked the SUV a the corner of 30th and Ogden and just walked in her house.

It was broad daylight and not 3 minutes earlier the street was active with neighbors.

I had a girl who lived right off that corner. I'm glad she's outta there.

I was overseas this week when this happened and live on the same block. This is not the first violent occurence on our block - almost two years ago a women living a few doors down fom Saturday's victim was brutally raped and almost murdered in her home. There have also been muggings and car break ins.
Weirdly, despite all that, I never feel nervous living on the block as the neighbors are fantastic and friendly and there is a sense of community. Maybe I am just in denial. Coming home from abroad and hearing about the home invasion definitely upset and shocked me. How often have I unloaded groceries with my front door open etc? I hope this man gets nabbed quickly before he traumatizes or hurts someone else. His act certainly seems extremely brazen doing it in broad daylight and without knowing who else was inside (they have a dog too) I will be more vigilant of my surroundings for sure - but I still think the fact that it was Ogden doesn't mean much, that is random, this could have happened anywhere in the city.

Anywhere is right. It happened in upscale suburban Haddonfield, NJ a few weeks ago. Different suspect, but very similar tactic.

It's all about the pepper-spray keychain!

The difference is that in Haddonfield, nothing like that had ever happened before. The police chief was quoted as saying that he'd never seen any crime of that type in his 25 years. While it is certainly possible that it could happen again in Haddonfield, the probability is very low. In Philly, you have to have your guard up and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

That's right...and I think someone on PB once asked for advice of what to do differently in the city than elsewhere to keep guard up. There is a big example: never leave your unattended door open for too long when your hands are full.

If you are that worried about bringing in deliveries alone, try the home-delivery service that a few grocery chains offer. It is just a few dollars in fee and tips, so if you shop infrequently and buy in large quantities, it may be worth it in time and worry saved. Plus, you practically get a bodyguard loading your groceries for you.

Whoa. I did not here about this! My wife and i live on that block. This happened on Saturday afternoon? I am usually super wary of leaving doors open at all without my neighbors outside keeping an eye on things. I think I remember a cop car pulling down the street going the wrong direction. I was bunkered in the house studying for an exam.

I always tell my wife, that the best we can do is be aware and try not to put yourself in situations where you are exposed or vulnerable. I kind of like the pepper spray key chain idea.

I hate that incidents like this give me a pit in my stomach.
