Default Missing Bridge Railing on Poplar St Bridge

So... this morning while walking across the Poplar St Bridge (b/w 30th and the Park), I noticed that most (but not all) of the railing on the south side of the bridge had been removed. Given the absence of any warning tape or other signs of city involvement, I am assuming that this was the work of some industrious individuals who decided that the city needed to replace the railing and therefore removed the old one as a favor so the city wouldn't have to undertake that expense.

Or is that just wishful thinking?

(In any event, please be careful as you cross the bridge.)

Thanks for the heads up.

Here's my guess: someone recycled the railing (scrap metal) to support their habit. I've seen more people around the neighborhood trash picking, and more so on recycling days, looking for scrap metal.

Yeah, that's what I figured as well. Does anyone know who the appropriate agency would be to contact about getting this fixed?

The cops were there this morning, so hopefully it will be fixed soon. Quite dangerous!

After I drove by boat house row I passed the bridge and there were two cops there. There was a police line blocking off the bridge and there was a copy putting rubber gloves on as if he was going to go and collect evidence or something.

I stopped and asked them what was going on down at boat house row but the guy seemed annoyed and said that he was working on something else...

It may be junkie crime, but that would have to be a pretty industrious and well-equipped junkie. You would need to have the right tools and a pretty big truck to steal that much safety railing. I'm betting that's about 1200-1500 pounds of metal gone. I'm guessing that there were about a dozen sections missing, and they probably run at least 100 pounds each.

Compounding the outrage is the fact that countless kids use that bridge to get to the playground.

Check the bolts out on the N side guard rail. Looks like someone threw something corrosive on the bolts.

I was wondering if this filth did this from train track level. Easy access down there, just unscrew the bolts and pull it down.

Now we have ugly concrete. What a shame! I used to enjoy the view walking across that bridge.
