Seriously, Fairmount Park Code 15-202309 prohibits model airplanes, which the Park might apply to the model rockets, I don't know.
I hope it works out for your son and his friends, though. It sounds like a cool idea.
Really? I've definitely seen people doing model planes there before at the bottom of belmont plateau. Next thing you'll know they'll prohibit kites too. If we want kids to get out of the ghettos and away from drugs and guns, we need to encourage fun hobbies like these in urban areas (within reason of course... safety first).

I'm especially happy when I see kids doing science related hobbies like rocketry and aeronautics. I learned so much about math like trig and even some calculus by middle school because I had something fun like rocketry that let me apply it in a practical way.

P.S. See the movie "October Sky" if you haven't already, or better yet, read the book.

One of the all-time great movies. And did you know that "October Sky" is an anagram for "Rockets Boys", the name they called themselves?

Didn't notice that before. Rocket Boys is also the name of the book which is a good read for the details the movie leaves out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket_Boys
