Go there at 11 p.m. Friday night for a good idea. Almost all areas are safe at 10 on a Tuesday morning.

I was there around 6pm on a weekday and I saw a few men milling about that I would not feel comfortable encountering on a dark night. I hate to judge an area so quickly, hence I am hoping to get locals' or neighbors' opinions on the area.

just as an immediate thought, the area seems to border fairmont and broad...i guess that could be a good or bad thing.

The 1500 block of Green is perfectly fine; that block of Mt. Vernon has seen a ton of recent renovations that are up for sale or sold. More north of that, I think may be a bit sketchy, but I don't head up that way too much since it's really a no-man's land.

Remember that with all the new construction there things will change, I'd say, fairly rapidly, but yes it has a bit of a sketchy reputation at the moment. Change is coming soon.

Well, if you have to ask....

No really, if you are worried about shady characters that is probably not the best place to move to. The neighborhood is drastically improved from years ago but there is still a pocket of drug dealers and other dregs that will never leave unless the city sells of the PHA housing in the area (which ain't gonna happen).

I doubt if you are at much greater risk than anywhere else in Spring Garden/Fairmount though. Most of the problems are basically internecine violence between people who know each other and not directed at random victims.
