A new florist is due to open shortly at 25th & Aspen, in the former dry cleaner's space. I'll post here when it's open.

God, yes, we need a better wine store. I wonder if we could convince the PLCB to open one of their "superstores" up here. Especially since we have the Wine School a few steps away.

Or for wine, can the present store on Fairmount (around 18th) get a bump up with some more good stuff? Is there a process for that/a place to request such a thing? I would guess this is a money thing as thye would probably sell nicer stuff if they thought the market was there for it?

There is a liquir store on Girard but it might actually be worse than the one on Fairmount; toss up.

Places that would make my neighborhood complete:

a shoe store
a shoe repair store
a clothing boutique with reasonable prices
a card or stationery store with upscale goods
a car wash
a mexican restaurant
a vegetarian restaurant
a Foodery-type place, but with better prices
a better CVS
a nice nail salon, complete with masseuse

If your proposed business is one of the above (and you have good customer service), I would support you.

Yes; sorry, I should have been more specific. I believe the dry cleaner is to move to the rear of the building and the florist will be up front. But we'll see.

I think there is a shoe store on Fairmount (south side around 19th street)

There was a stationery place on Parrish (maybe around 23rd); but it closed; I assume due to lack of biz?

There is a car wash place (weekends at least) on 25th between Poplar and Girard)

As for clothes; that would be nice but who would open a place like that in Fairmount? Consignment maybe, but a botique would do better on Old City/Rittenhouse or MNK.

If/when they build Parkway 22 there might be the density and cash for these places.

I am in for the others especially Mexican

Plenty of places to do nails up here on West Girard.

I'll second that one. I really wanted the place across from Mugshots to be a newsstand and book store. It would've been a good fit with Mugshots, which doesn't have much to read and needs more outdoor seating too, so they could've worked out an arrangement between the two places. Instead we got a low-end antiques place that sells mostly flea market-quality stuff.

Speaking of bookstores, I stopped by the Franklin Mills mall on Sunday on the way to my mom's house, and wanted to get a book for her. No dice. I noticed that Franklin Mills has 15 shoe stores and zero book stores. Way to go, NE Philly!

Anyway, yes, if someone would open a Mexican place in Fairmount, pasaré mucho dinero en su restaurante.

Bagels...desperately seeking a quality Bagel place that is not as far as 3rd & South.

Simple bagels, cream cheeses, coffee.... closes when they run out of bagels for the day...

Bagel place; had one around 25th and Merredith. Closed and became the Fairmount Arts Center. Not sure why it closed exactly.

I am sensing a theme here. Is it possible that the commercial opportunity in Fairmount is not as large as we think it is? As often as there is a thread on parking, maybe Fairmount is a little more suburban (as in load in the car kids, we are off to the mall) than we think and a local place needs to be really special to make it? Those that know commerical real estate and biz stuff please correct me, but things like book stores need foot traffic of which we may lack?

Then again; NoLibs and Fishtown continue to have new cool stuff open. Why there and not here?

Although Mexican; I can't rememeber a Mexican place giving it a go here; maybe that's the ticket.

Excuse me, but that's a great shop. Much better than flea market-quality (although I've got no problem with flea markets), the owners have excellent taste and the store has a real personality. I've had many an out-of-town guest shop there, find great stuff, and feel like they got a bargain.

If we could get more shops like Oliver's it would be a great thing.

I think Fairmount just needs a critical mass of retail. Right now there's not enough to support strolling and window shopping.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I went there a few times when they opened and it wasn't what I expected. Haven't been back in a while. I'm glad the store does well and has regular customers. Maybe I started out biased against the place because it wasn't the use I wanted for that space.
