How do you really tell the difference between a good solid group that cares about the community and one that has questionable motives?

I understand the reservations about community groups. There are many that do certain things that I do not think are right as well.
I, and my fellow board members, strive hard to have the group as open and honest as possible. As an example, in our by laws we have it where any member can ask to look at the books at any time.
The only real way you can know about a group is to be part of it or at least speak with the members. Outside of that, look at what they do.
