Default Urban Saloon - Stop The Madness

Don't get me wrong, I love the place and we've enjoyed it since it opened. A great addition, and a beautiful space.

BUT - we sat down to watch the Phillies game on Saturday around 1pm last weekend. We were looking forward to a few beers (maybe 8 or 9), apps, and an enjoyable afternoon.

We were then given brunch menus and told that this was all that was available until 4 or 5. That means beer and something like eggs and pancakes unless you wanted a burger (and that is the one item that I am not a fan of at US - not bad, but I get better burgers elsewhere and try to cap the # per week). Those great appetizers were also unavailable.

We had to get up and go, as I had not yet had lunch - and we heard at least 4 other parties (some sizable, one a softball team) complaning loudly about the same thing.

There were only about 12 people / 3 tables having bruch. I know that our subsequent bill at Rembrandt's was close to $60. And this was with Adam Eaton on the mound. I can only imagine that this decision results in a net loss as the people who would've stayed for drinks/apps would've spent far more over 3 hours than a foursome there for a 40 minute brunch.

Please tell me this has stopped. I can see having all day brunch on a Sunday - but on Saturday it seems like a big miss. I'd hate to see this great place and the owners (who have always been nice to us) make such a big error. Gordon Ramsey would call for this to change immediately in favor of a balanced lunch menu loaded with greasy apps.

And we have 76ers and Flyers day playoff games coming up over the next few Saturdays. We need salty appetizers for that, or we all lose!

I'd have to agree.

Went there for a Sunday Flyers game in January and was less than impressed with the ambience. It felt really hollow in there and seemed like they needed a little more separation from the bar area and the seating area. That place would be better served by having booths along the far wall, imo.

Also, "saloons" shouldn't have Standard Tap-esque brunches. Be like a McGillin's and you'll be better off.

Thank you. I'm done now.

Exactly what I would have said. It does have this overly spacious cold lonely feel to it when it's quiet. And not offering a proper menu at 1 pm is just a joke. I'd imagine by that time most people are past wanting pancakes etc.

I've actually stopped eating there at night too, the place gets very crowded and you end up eating with people practically towering over you.

It seems they need to find the right balance somehow.

100% concurrence.

I did notice that wings were also on the brunch menu, but the choices were extremely limited, as has been pointed out.

Advice: If you are going to be a SPORTS BAR, or have the same characteristics as a sports bar, i.e. pub-like food and beer with big-arse TVs showing sporting events, then you need to forget about a silly brunch menu after 12 noon on the weekends and offer food that is usually found in a SPORTS BAR that people like to eat when they are drinking. Don't know about you, but I don't like waffles and eggs with my beer!

I only went once on the weekends during the afternoon for this very reason.

Brunch is such a pain in the a$$. Offer it if you must, but stick the brunchies in a corner and get back to your real business - beer & greasy bar food.

Default Same Deal, love the place, had to leave because of brunch

Went on a Sunday in March and had to leave because the kids (very children friendly) wanted the awesome chicken fingers and we wanted the regular stuff.

We still go at night and like everything about it.

Doesn't surprise me, reading about this. Back in Jan, few weeks after they opened, hubby and I made a concerted effort to go there for dinner to support a new biz in Fairmount. We were told their kitchen wasn't open that night. We were pissed and unimpressed and have never been back. Either you are a sports bar/restaurant or you are just a bar and should not hang a menu in the window or tell people you are an eating establishment. Seems little has changed -- something is either wrong with management or kitchen. A great shame cos the location and space is fantastic. I hope they read these reviews and get their act together...there are too many great restaurants in our 'hood (Trio, Rembrandts, Zorbas, L'Oca, Jacks, London, Illuminaire, Bishops Collar etc) to not keep up with the very basics of hospitality standards.

I'm sure the owners would love to hear from you. Not that they will do much about it -- i and many others have had horrible experiences with other ventures of theirs.

I think there are enough places to do brunch in the area that Urban Saloon could get away with serving LUNCH food. Everywhere I go it's brunch this and brunch that. You know what? I HATE eggs in the afternoon!

It's a great place to watch sports and the openness is great when there's a big crowd there to watch whatever game is on... When it was a new establishment, I was disappointed with the food. The burritos were basically white rice with boiled no-flavor chicken and a couple onions at one end. I noticed some menu items have changed, has the quality of the food? I've only eaten salads there lately.

It's amazing how one bad experience can turn a person off for a long time. Friends from South Philly came up to watch and Eagles game and to this day they talk about the crappy service. I come to the defense of US though, there was like a HUNDRED people there and 2 waiters!

Last time I ate there was around 4 weeks ago on a saturday night. I ordered the lasagne, and I tell you it was the most god awful thing I have ever eaten in a restaurant or bar my whole life. No one else at the table thought too much of their food either (which all arrived at different times!), everyone had food left on their plate because it was bad.

I appreciate that there doesn't seem to be enough waiting staff when it's busy, but if it's quicker for me to slalom through the crowd to get to the bar and order drinks before anyone else at the table sees our waiter then you can only make so many excuses for them.

We've been there 4 times over-all and the only good experience was sitting at the bar early on a Saturday night. The bartender was excellent and chatty. Might go back to have a few drinks, but will have to eat before hand. Big thumbs down for the restaurant side of the establishment.
