I love 80s R&B - it's fun, goofy, and easy dance to since I dance in a fun, goofy kind of way. It's called letting yourself go a bit. I would much rather have that atmosphere (doing the humpty hump), than listening to modern music (not even sure what that is anymore) while everyone strikes their cool poses in their respective corners. The place has found a needed niche in a neighborhood full of great bars.

I just want to say that I was in there a couple of Sundays ago to watch the Phils game and the bartender there was arguably the nicest bartender I have ever met. I know the place was dead, but this guy was making conversation, giving us a few on the house, and putting forth a really good vibe. I hear everyone out on the space issues and the menu (my burger was on bread slices) but I'm going back if for no other reason than this guy sold me.
He gave us a Hoegarden on the house. Hoegarden! |

I agree with the original post that the Saloon should skip brunch (at least on Saturdays) since we have PLENTY of other choices for this in the neighborhood.
However the rest of you old heads need to stop bashing this place and go back to your rocking chairs. Please stay away and leave more room for the young, attractive, clientele that currently go there. They, unlike you go because they know there is no other place in Fairmount that has enough space, lots of tvs, as well as a good beer selection and good CHEAP bar food. No where. Take out the space factor (and in many cases the cheap factor) and you have a ton of places to go. But for young bucks like myself this is the best place in the neighborhood. So please just stop going there if you think the food is so bad and the music is horrible (it may not always be my taste either but whatever). I certainly appreciate everything the owners have done with the place and I wish them continued success. I'm sure most of the 20 somethings in the neighborhood will agree with me. |

you can be young and attractive and still have good taste in music and atmosphere, ya know...it doesn't have to be one or the other. |

I didn't mean that...in fact they don't play my taste in music either. However I still go there for the other reasons I mentioned, and am just trying to make a point that I appreciate what they did with that place, and I hate to see people talk about how terrible it is. And my guess is the younger people are looking past the music thing and still enjoy the place for what it is (since thats the type of crowd I see there).

Just had dinner there. The playlist included Phil Collins, ABBA, Pat Benatar, Duran Duran and Blondie. It's like when you walk through the door you pass through a wormhole that transports you to Northeast Philly circa 1985. Watching the Phillies game, I was half-tempted to ask the guy next to me how Von Hayes was doing this season.
Oh well, whatever, nevermind. They've found their niche. Vaya con Dios.
