I received h/o association rules when I put down the deposit on my previous two homes.

Regarding the comment about condos: Not all homeowners' associations are condos. One that I lived in out in Chester County was detached single family homes, you were responsible for all of your own upkeep, landscaping and snow removal. The h/o association was only responsible for the streets and the playground.

Given the choice, I'd probably still live in a townhouse where the h/o association took care of gardening, trash & snow removal, etc. Since I purchased my house in Roxborough I've realized how much time I need to spend on those things on weekends.

$750,000? I can almost buy the Fumo house for that!!

I've been looking at properties in Roxboro/Manayunk, Fairmount, Graduate Hospital, and Mt. Airy. 350-450k will get you a good property and no association fees. Condos in center city start at 300+K then tack on mondo fees.. one place was over $.50/sf!!! I think we are definitely getting a real house when we buy next year. I asked for the assn rules when I moved in from the sales office, explaining that I was a renter and wanted to know what I could get away with. (doesn't mean I wasn't going to try, though)

where are there single family homes in fairmount that are 350,000?

750,000?? Your talking in center city\old city or a trendy condo... you should be able to find a VERY nice house for 350,000 anywhere in the city! I'm in South Philly, bought the house 9 months ago, 3 stories, 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms... $190,000!!

Depends what you mean by single family. A couple homes right near me have sold for about 300. They've been small single-family homes - 2 or three small bedrooms, one bathroom, a small yard or patio. And then, technically (maybe?) north of Fairmount, there are several houses for sale on Harper Street and Cambridge Street for under 250. Also not huge houses, but they'd fit a small family. And they're in pretty good shape.
