I'm just looking a place in SG, FM, or UCity.

If anyone happens to see for rent signs, would you mind writing them down for me? I would myself, but I am 1,300 miles away.

Hell, I'll even pay someone to do this. I am getting DESPERATE!!!!

These will be the landlords who are looking to avoid paying a realtor fee or for an ad in the paper. Their rents will almost always be below market. This has been the way to go for cheap apartments for a long time--the person who gave me the advice told me she'd been doing it since the 60s. It has always worked in my experience. The other piece of advice is to ask around the commercial establishments--maybe not bars or restaurants, but pharmacies and cleaners and such. They ofter have rentals above the store that are cheap...good luck!
This is very good advice (ignoring the company ads). Once I remember walking around Fairmount and writing down phone numbers of rental companies from the facades/windows of buildings I'd consider living in, and every one of the numbers I had written did not have an apartment available at the location where the signs were posted - Do not trust the rental companies in this regard. The same happened when I was looking to rent a place in Logan Square. For example, there are signs posted on the windows of buildings on 21st Street, and when you call them, they don't have an apartment open there. Basically, I found our current apartment looking in Philly Weekly, and then was the first one to come up with deposit money b/c the apt was already seen by 6 people the same day it was first advertised. You have to act very quickly if you see a place you really want.

Default Private landlords

Did the person who originally post this question (about finding private landlords in the Fairmount) come up with any good suggestions. I'm in the same spot right now and not finding much on Craigslist. I'm going to try the driving around approach and looking in stores, but if anybody found any other specific good sources please share. Thanks.
