I took a drive around there last night, a little sketchy, but not any worse then what I've seen around Philly, and compared to Kensignton and south-west philly its like Rittenhouse haha. Like I said the apartment is BRAND NEW everything top to bottom so I know its nice at least on the inside, and me and my girlfriend just like to hang out inside a lot anyway, not very social, I play video games, she reads like crazy, and we both a lot. When we do go out I'm sure North Star will be the place.

I read all of your replys and I thank you all for taking the time to help me out. If we do get the place which we should considering we have the money, good credit, and no one else has applied yet, I plan on having a moving in BBQ the second weekend of April (my Birthday is the 8th as well) in which all of you are invited, pending you RSVP by PM.

Thanks again and If we get the place I plan on being an active contributor to this Forum..we'll see.
Congratulations, and welcome to the neighborhood (hopefully) - Brewerytown, Fairmount and beyond. It's a wonderful area populated by the most bizarre mix of people you'll ever meet in this City...all here for different reasons, which may be why there are a million opinions on this area.

Someone was just shot in the middle of the afternoon today a block from there.

Easy now...other reports put this on the 1500 block of Myrtlewood. That is more than a few blocks north, 5 or 6, past Girard and almost to Cecil B Moore. We've already discussed how limited the reasons to go up there are. Regardless, this is sad, but it shouldn't be a factor in influencing someone to avoid moving to our corner of the world.

IT'S OFFICIAL, APRIL 1st ME AND MY GIRLFRIEND WILL BE MOVING IN!!

just got the call about an hour ago, we got approved. pending no one empties my bank account without me knowing haha, we'll be moving in on the 1st!!

About that shooting earlier, thats a good distance away from my block and I'm not worried about it really. Theres going to be shooting and crime wherever you go in the city so **** it. I'm more worried about getting robbed and my house/car broken into etc, but i'll just get renters insurance and the club so whatever

I'm not quite set on the date for the BBQ yet. It will either be April 5th or 12th, I'll let you all know in a post when the dates get closer.

Also, I DJ from time to time and I make beats etc. (for real Hip-Hop not 50 cent style bullshit), so if anyone reading this makes music, hit me up, maybe we can set something up

Anyway, thanks again for all the tips, and I'll see you all very soon!!

As a Republican Ward representative, Civic Association Boardmember and neighbor, I say welcome to the neighborhood.

As for crime issues, I walk from Broad and Girard subway to my home (behind Girard College) 10, 11 and 12 at night when I am doing stuff in the City. Yes there is crime, but at some point we all do have to say enough is enough and take our neighborhoods back.

I know it is easier said than done, but we have to try and keep that mindset... but also be safe while doing it.

A potential homeowner should probably take a hard look at those blocks on 29th north of Girard as well. It's a terrific collection of rowhouse facades and those for sale could probably be purchased and rehabbed for less than the above prices.

Like I said before, it's all about previous experiences, and if yours are better than mine then fair play. I can only base my posts on my own experience and knowledge. I'm not deliberately downing Girard and north for the sake of it, or based purely on word of mouth.

Problem is while these buildings sit empty and in a terrible state of repair, the value will never increase. Some times the greedy have to learn to cut their losses and move on, only then will the area get it's chance.(Anyone hear of Asbury Park, NJ, the owners deliberately left the town to go to hell to pocket all the government handouts, but never re-developed, those people are now in jail and the town is re-building).

Not sure how far I'd wander alone or after dark, that's really what I'm trying to put across here. It's a different story if you only have yourself to look after, but the OP has a girlfriend and I have a wife, so I always consider safety my highest priority, though I'll never live in Rittenhouse, its just not for me.

i think that i saw them working on the ritas place between 29th and 28th next to the seafood place on the north side. coffee shop is dead.

your digging a hole sir. you sound like your not from here. everything you just said is completely wrong. the value in housing north of girard has increased by in some cases by 300% over the last 3 years. i cant tell you how many rehabs have happened and how many more are on the way. there is a lot of interest in this area. you obviously have no idea and i question why you feel the need to knock down an area based solely on a passing through

As a business owner and resident of Girard Avenue (for over 3 years), I can assure you that Girard Avenue is very safe - day or night. Yes, things do happen, but they happen EVERYWHERE, including in presumably safe and stable neighborhoods like Fairmount. To read that you actually have streets mapped out in your mind that you will not cross is VERY, VERY sad. Where do you think you are? You're in Fairmount? If you're that afraid of streets a block or two from your house, you should move to Gladwyne or Ardmore. By the way, the shooting you referred to, was the result of a scuffle between two men in Lee's Chinese Kitchen on 29th Street right below Girard Avenue. I don't know the latest details, but apparently one guy tried to rob another guy while he was waiting for Chinese food, and during the scuffle (caught clearly on the store camera), one guy got shot in the leg.

To the young couple that is thinking of moving to 29th and Girard...go for it. You currently live in what's called "The Bottom". That is a FAR worse place than 29th and Girard. And by the way, there are many, many young white singles/couples moving to that particular block you're interesting in, and the "locals" are very friendly. Be warned: there is a "stop 'n go" type deli at one corner, and it does attract lowlifes, including whites from below Girard who come up to get cheap beer at all hours, but 29th and Girard Avenue is a major intersection for SEPTA - trolleys on Girard, and several buses on 29th Street, so there's a large cross section of the community out at all hours waiting to get on or off of a trolley or bus. Your addition to the neighborhood would be very welcome, and it would continue the admittedly SLOW "trend" we're seeing of the neighborhood evolving into a desirable place to live - and open a business.

Seek out other opinions, even other negative ones, park and walk around at night, check out the scenery, then decide if it's worth it to you. Good luck!
not to mention that they have nothing to do with teh drug trade. sh!t happens aroounf her to those who are involved. as for people stealing your sh!t, get a dog, at any rate you wont have a problem.

i would like to mention that those who live here are telling you one thing and then there are others who dont live here telling you another.

as for "has it gotten better over the past 2 years"....YES. over the last 4 years it has changed leaps and bounds.....take a trip to cecil b and 28th and thats what it looed like 4 years ago.

being white has nothing to do with anything. the content of melanin will not make a difference unless you make it an issue.

our neighborhood is an amazing place no matter what other people say.
