Default schuykill canal

Just a question: is there a navigable canal between the Fairmount Waterworks or how is small craft supposed to go through the Fairmount Waterworks???

They can't. There used to be a canal on the West bank of the river there, where West River Drive and the Schyulkill Expressway is now. Actually a friend of mine's dad, John Kogel, is an interesting local painter and has a great panting of that canal with the dam and the waterworks and the Art Museum in the background that I have stared at many times trying to put myself in that scene.

This is what is used to look like...





I believe that most of the lock was demolished to relocate west river drive when the Schuylkill Expressway went through.

Before the Fairmount Dam, the farthest most ships could navigate were the waterfalls and rapids at East Falls - the location of the modern falls bridge. Building the Fairmount Dam backed the water up so that the Falls of East Falls are now underwater...
