Default 17th and Spring Garden

Since I've relocated (all of three weeks ago), I've been eating everything that isn't nailed down. In order to stave off the extra pounds (I just lost 25 lbs and I'm not looking to put it back on), I started walking everywhere instead of taking public transportation. This is such a small city compared to NY, I figured it would be a breeze -- and it is.

While I'm waiting for a permanent, full-time job to show up, I signed up for temp work and my first gig is at Philadelphia Community College. Decided to take a walk over there and see how easy it would be to get there and back.

It was very easy, but.... there isn't much in this part of town, is there? I think someone here mentioned that they lived in the Packard Bldg (I could be wrong). Nice building, but it seems to be in the middle of nowhere.

I guess this message doesn't need a reply.... just musing...

if you drive, the packard is great. pcunicelli lives behind there too. there's savannah's on 18th and callowhill as well as rose tattoo which is popular with the GSK crowd. also, westy's is my favorite sports bar in teh city. whole foods is at 20th and hamilton. there ios a nice littel park at 18th and hamilton, across from the new Philly CC.

Gee, how did I miss all that?

Hmmm... I walked straight up 17th Street; I guess that's how. Then I walked on Spring Garden until I got to Broad and walked back to Walnut.

I guess this neighborhood works better for drivers than pedestrians like me.

Default Callowhill

Right, the area between Vine & Spring Garden, Broad & 20th is kind of barren at the moment, though there's going to be a big new residential development at 19th & Hamilton called the Tivoli. I've also heard various noises being made to the effect that the big surface lot at 17th & Vine might be developed, which I'd love to see happen.

Five, what you needed to do was keep walking to the north and west of 17th & SG - you'd get into the Spring Garden neighborhood, which is quite nice (towards the east it's more iffy, but there's a lot of revitalization going on there at the moment). Then, once you crossed Fairmount Avenue, you'd be in Fairmount, my neighborhood. Also lively.

There's a very pleasant little bakery/coffee shop at 22nd and Brandywine (just north of Spring Garden) called Zach's; if you do that walk again and are looking for a bit of a libation at the end of it, you might aim for there.

Ok.... gee, I learn something new every day around here....

But we already covered the 'looking for libation' thing somewhere... a lady doesn't go looking for libation alone in the big city...

Hi, I'm new to this site, and to Philadelphia in general, but I think this is a great site! I noticed this thread because I am investigating neighborhoods, and wondered what you think about this block. We moved here a few months ago from Boston and we're renting in University City, but are thinking of buying on the CC side of the river. I am tempted by the thought of being able to walk to Whole Foods and Chinatown, while still allowing for a quick drive to UPHS, but am not that familiar with the area. Everything immediately around Whole Foods looks nice, but our drive around Spring Garden/15th St looked less promising. Do any of you have any advice or opinions?

Skr, I would recommend starting a new thread saying something like moving to philly, looking for neighborhoods, you'll get more people responding.

But where you want to live depends a lot on what you want to spend. I am looking ALL over the city, and what I can afford is greatly influencing my decision.

If money was not that much of an object, I would probably look at queen village or bella vista. (Buying a nice home in these places could run you in the 240-400 range).

Also from many parts of bella vista, you can walk to the whole foods.

But that is just me.

Welcome to the blog, and good luck.
