What kind of logic is that? We have a big park, so there is no need for a small neighborhood park? Let's bulldoze Rittenhouse and Washington Square while we're at it...I mean they are in too nice of neighborhoods to be wasting the space like that. If anyone has a problem they can just head up to Fairmount Park.

To me it's a question of constituencies. Is this a space for the people of Philadelphia to enjoy, or is this only so much real estate to be sold off for private profit? I feel it's the former, obviously.

As a side note, if there ever is any considerable retail on the parkway, wouldn't it be wonderful to go get a bite to eat and walk over to a nice plush lawn to sit down on and eat?

Relax.......we're just having a conversation here. I was simply trying to say that due to the proximity of these two parks that serve the same purpose it wouldn't kill anyone if this park went away. I'll try to find a map of the field we play on for you guys. It's right next to a basketball court also. The field also has a backstop and benches.

I'm surprised I haven't noticed it before, but then again I'm not very observant.

I think you'll find that if this issue ever comes up again there will be many hundreds of people who will be not just interested, but passionate and very upset about this. Von Colln Field is for many Fairmounters as much of an institution as St. Franny's church, and they wouldn't take its removal lightly. Longtime Fairmounters have already seen 2 other Parkway-area ballfields, one at 24th and Fairmount and the other at 26th and Pennsylvania, replaced with large apartment buildings (the Philadelphian and 2601, respectively).

To me personally it's not even so much about baseball, but just having a big lawn to play catch, or frisbee, or hackey sack, or have a picnic all while looking at one of the finest views of the skyline in the city.

Neil, the fact that your so passionate about this ballfield is somewhat inspiring. I looked on mapquest, the field I spoke of is located between Sedgely and Poplar streets. When the issue does arise again be aware there is a field just nearby maybe then you'll have a better argument.

Are you talking about Belmont Plateau? I've been there and I love it, but I bike everywhere (I don't have a car), and the price you pay for the great view there is a rather large hill climb. I extensively explore and appreciate Fairmount, but it is still nice to have a neighborhood park.

If your standing at the end of Poplar and looking at the Lemon Hill House, your looking across the baseball field.
