I've never eaten here but I'm going to make a point of doing so sometime this fall. I really like the way they've stood up for themselves through the Foie Gras nonsense that was forced upon them. They're selling a T-shirt that says "Viva Le Foie - London Grill" (pictured in article) and holding a Foie Gras Dinner on Oct 22. Good for them.
From today's Inquirer: "Nearly 20 restaurants, backed by the nation's largest foie-gras producers and one of the largest wholesalers, will offer "Freedom Foie for Five" - lunch and dinner portions priced at $5 - to expose more people to the dish, regularly served in fewer than a dozen restaurants. The seven-day promotion starts Monday. "It's not an answer just to the protesters. I'm more concerned about City Hall. It's an answer to everyone who's telling us what to do," said Terry McNally, co-owner of London Grill in Fairmount, which has served foie gras on and off since the early 1990s. "I continue to support freedom of choice." Full article: http://www.philly.com/philly/news/ho...er_it_up_.html

To offer the other side - I never really cared for the place and this pretty much guarantees I won't ever go there again.
This "standing up for themselves" seems more like stooping to a lower level. People don't like what we do? Let's rub it in their face and disguise it as freedom of choice/expression - exactly what HFP hides behind. Not surprising that this "freedom of choice" is "backed by the nation's largest foie-gras producers and one of the largest wholesalers." People always do the dumbest things for money and it seems like London is baa-baaing with the best of them. Last edited by bubbasammyiii : 09-26-2007 at 09:49 AM. |

London is doing more than lowering the price of foie gras and serving their customers (both could have been accomplished in a much classier fashion) - they're part of a large foie gras campaign complete with a ridiculous name "Freedom Foie for Five," quotes on the front page of the Inquirer, and t-shirts that read "vive le foie!"
I guess I didn't make it clear enough, but my reference to HFP hiding behind freedom of speech was an allusion to their obnoxious tactics of using a bullhorn to scream in someone's face. What I think is equally obnoxious is London's ridiculous corporate-backed campaign and t-shirt. |

Why is it ridiculous and why does the fact corporations are helping have anything to do with this discussion at all? They are just trying to introduce foie to people who have never tried it before it gets banned. Maybe trying to fight back before legislation is introduced in City Council. How dare they.

Kudos to London (and others) for sticking their ground. Boo to the likes of Stephen Starr, who caved like a puss at the notion of protesters outside his establishment (and/or house). __Jason

![]() Why is it a problem that it is "corporate backed"? I can name thousands of other companies that temporarily discount their items to gain awareness and to get customers to try their product in hopes they will become returning customers. They irony is that they probably wouldn't have done this without HFP attacking the product. In essence, HFP is achieving the opposite because the people they attacked are fighting back and trying to reach more people. I mean, is a car dealership evil because they are selling a car for less because Ford is offering a discount on the new models?

Not everything should be turned into a freedom of choice/speech/expression argument. Since the foie gras legislation was already introduced, but has been floundering in committee for the past 1.5 years, I gather it's not even on City Council's radar.
I'll let you guys do your thing. I'm afraid I can't rally behind foie gras. I hope London attracts more customers by this stunt - so rad! no way! I can't believe they stuck it to those HFP punks! - but I'm out. ![]() |
