Default HORROR ON THE LAWN: Halloween movies at Eastern State Pen

The 3rd Annual Presentation of

HORROR ON THE LAWN

7:30-8:30
"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown"
"Simpsons Tree House of Horrors"

followed by

"Young Frankenstein"
8:30

At Eastern State Penitentiary Park, 22nd and Brown Streets, Fairmount.

This is a fun event, especially the kid portion of the evening, and for the last few years we've been blessed with weather mild enough to enjoy it. The films are projected on a large white sheet hung on the north wall of the Penitentiary.

Dang, sorry. The date is this Saturday, Oct. 30.

I can't put it in the calendar; could you, Wil?

I know this is kinda off topic and a little late. Just out of curiosity, is anyone else offended by them making Eastern State Penitentiary into a hanuted house every year? I think its degrading to the buildings history. I kinda feel like its a mockery to the site. Kinda gimmicky eh? But hey..........it makes the ESP foundation tons of money toward the upkeep of this historic site. I heard its not even scary. The day tour is more scary AND you get to learn about the history of the site. I'd recommend going sometime, its incredibly interesting. Any thoughts?

Well, I'm not crazy about the event myself, but not because I think it's degrading to the site. I just think it's kind of silly to dress it all up like a haunted house when the building itself is plenty spooky enough. Just walk a group of people through there at night - no props, no actors dressed as ghouls jumping out - and there will be plenty of chills. It has incredible atmosphere. When I went on the Halloween tour I was disappointed - you wouldn't have even known you were in ESP. They didn't use its ambience at all. That was a number of years ago, and I haven't done it since, so maybe it's better now.

But I don't begrudge the ESP people their fundraiser. They need to make the money to keep the site up somehow. I would just recommend a regular tour over this event if you actually want to see the Pen and learn something about it.

plus the audio is done by Mr. Pink. I believe the terror behind the walls is roughly 70% of the revenue every year.

Hey folks, try raising money some time.

Folks at the Pa. Ballet hate the Nutcracker Suite - but it pays for a huge amount of their program.

Eastern State Prison - it's spooky place. And how does anything degrade it's reputation.
