I dunno. It's sadly hilarious and infuriating at the same time. What, it's ok to block a fire hydrant to pick up your dry-cleaning as long as you work for the fire department?
Uhhh...did you see that it is a fire dept vehicle and the guy is a fireman. Obviously he parked there for a few minutes to pick up some dry cleaning. I don't have a problem with that at all.

It's different when I'm in a private parking lot and I'm hugging along the red "fire curb" that stretches all 4 sides of a huge big box store, and there ain't no fire hydrant to be seen for at least a football field away... waiting to pick someone up coming out of the store.

But in the city, I never ever EVER even think about parking there because I know I will be slapped with a huge fine.

There has been one occasion in South Philly where I did get close to the corner, but didn't block it, to get something out of a store... and in that case the owner and her kids were outside the store beckoning me to park there because they saw I was circling and had the "hunt" face on.

But you can tell where this dude is in the photo... and that's not an area I would even try something like that. No way. Not when there's a meter maid for every 15 cars in this city.
I don't do it because it is wrong and sniffs of entitlement, not because of the fine.

Cute. Actually, though, the prof was a Pulitzer Prize winner... I think he knows something...

Um, yes? That would be the ironic part of it.

One of the very people who tell us not to block fire hydrants so that the hoses on their trucks can access the hydrants in the event of a fire... is blocking the hydrant. Hmm. You can say all you want about public servants deserving special treatment, and I have no problem with firemen and police officers and such getting discounts at local stores or whatever if the owners wish to offer that; but this is just hypocritical and dangerous. Period.

What really gets me is when i see PPA vehicles illegally parked, ticketing people, talking to each other, eating lunch or dropping off their minions. What ever happened to not breaking the "law" while enforcing it.

Yeah, I like to ask them if they're giving themselves a ticket.

It breeds the idea that being part of the government puts you above the government.

Default At the risk of sounding negative...

I think it's more than an idea in Philadelphia.

Huh...what is dangerous about it? I don't see your logic. The guy was only there a few minutes and if a fire broke out he would immediately be on the radio calling in the fire not to mention rescuing folks if needed. There is no safety issue so I am willing to give them this small perk. I don't see how this would be a Pulitzer Prize winning expose'.

I never said it was a Pulitzer-worthy photo It's just an instance of a public servant taking advantage of his job. A fireman knows he's not going to be ticketed for blocking a hydrant, just like a judge knows he/she's probably not going to be ticketed for parking illegally. It shouldn't happen, but it does.

At any rate, you're probably right about one thing: if a fire broke out, he most likely would be on the radio calling in the fire immediately. But that doesn't change the fact that his car is blocking the hydrant, to which fire trucks would need access. He could be too busy to move it, or--you never know--it could just refuse to start. In either case, it shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Really not trying to start a holy war here, though, I swear!
