Question What Is The Area Around Girard College Called?

Is there a name for the area around Girard College? I hear people say "I live at ____ and College Wall..." Media sources call it North Philadelphia, in its literature the school says it's in "Fairmount".

...Just curious...

By the way, I'm 'facilitating' "Journalism" and "Creative Writing" there this summer for "Camp Girard" and I'll be back in September in the After-School Program. We created an on-line newspaper...
http://GirardJOURNAL.blogspot.com and we're on the PhillyFuture blog site as well at http://phillyfuture.org/blog/769

It's not the Girard College of our youth, but it still offers a whole lot of opportunity and safety for kids to learn in a bucolic, pastoral setting inside the cocoon.

Once I get inside 'the wall' I really dread coming back out. Read about Girard's "Diversity" Initiatives at www.GirardCollege.com and click on the headline for the diversity initiative.

Camp Girard starts June 26th and is open to students in the community as well as Girard College students.

The most authoritative delineation of Philadelphia neighborhoods is found on the City Planning Commission website.

See page 45 of this report.

http://www.philaplanning.org/data/boundaries.pdf

From this, it seems that Girard College is its own entity and is not part of Fairmount. But because of its non affiliation with any other neighborhood it could broadly be considered a Fairmount institution.

Unfortunately, I know very little about Girard College except its location. Its high walls and fences are a deterrent to making it more knowable.

But good luck in your teaching stint there.

On my last post, I said that I knew very little about Girard College.

It almost seems like an alien edifice here.

But it would be nice if it could become a part of the community. I see from aerial photos that it has nice ball fields and perhaps even a gymnasium.

I know that as a teacher you do not have much of a say in the college’s policies, but I am wondering if some of those facilities are or can be used for neighborhood kids. There is such a lack of good wholesome activities that our kids find themselves hanging on corners with nothing to do.

also Sharswood (that may be what you're calling North Central).

Girard College is beautiful inside. I envy you for working there this summer. I've been inside once and can see it from my room - the grounds and the buildings are phenomenal.

Sharswood is a small neighborhood in North Philadelphia. It is located to the east of Brewerytown, north of Girard College, west of Ridge Avenue, and south of the Norman Blumberg apartment towers. It is often grouped with Brewerytown, as in the Brewerytown-Sharswood Community Civic Association, and the Brewerytown-Sharswood NTI Planning Area.

Topcat has it right.

Sharswood is the neighborhood north of Girard college. 25th and east is sharswood, 25th and west is brewerytown.
