Gasp!

To have available parking for the Prison and the residents?

Naw...lets rip it out and then build a garage so everyone get to pay more to park.

(How you going to recoup the costs of the facility?)

Don't worry...all those cars will just park in front of Your house now.

I'd like to see it develop...but in the case of University City we keep losong surface lots and they get replaced with garages that cost 3x as much to park.

Wanna know why retail dies in U city...its' the PPA at the price points for the lots.

(and no...I don't care about always late Septa which can't be used for anything outside of commuting.)

Good point. A multi-level lot would probably likely have to recoup its costs by increasing fees. Many residents have deeded parking privileges there, I am told, and I’m not sure what the impact would be to them.

With any significant modifications, it would have to be taken out of operation for a considerable period making the existing parking situation even worse in the short run.

I expect that the lot will be more intensely utilized by guests and staff after the Barnes Tower is built so I see the need for parking in the immediate area growing much larger in the future.

Don’t think that there’s an easy solution but hopefully the parking committees will come up with something.

The lot is too far from me and other Fairmount residents to be practical so maybe we need to think about decentralized parking options. I agree that this lot would be great for the revitalization of Fairmount Avenue if the right alternative is found.

The idea of a parking with retail establishments was studied by the Fairmount Community Development Corporation but like everything there needs to be some profit in it for a developer. Just satisfying the need for residential parking is not in itself sufficient to build it.

For a review of the parking issues and recommendations by the Fairmount Community Development Corporation see

The best solution is for Philly to get businesses to leave the suburbs and come back in the city so half the people can get rid of their car.

People will not "ged rid of their cars" ...and the more you make the less chance you have of them getting rid of their personal freedom.

...and the more garages you need.

That’s a good idea but would only work if they relocate to center city where public transportation from Fairmount is more convenient and reliable.

And people, especially families, need cars for other things other than just for work.

exactly, so I fail tosee the point in your earlier whining "wah, university city is getting developed and I have to pay for my parking space wah!"
From my understanding, that lot has a waiting list for psots and if that's the case, then it is failing to provide parking for the neighborhood. it works well for those withspots but not well for those without. It woudl seem to me there woudl be a good chance that a garage is needed. they shoudl have built that parkominium there instead of next to the bridge.

Sure they will. I have, and I have several friends who have.

about a year ago there was no waiting list for spots - as I had a friend who called and got a spot right away, and I've heard the rumor that there is waiting list for spots ("2 years long") for 4 years. Call em up.

Yes, but then you can go down from two cars a family to one.

As someone else said, you will never get rid of autos, especially if you have a family. You CAN lower the amount per family that is needed.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if you only needed one car to run errands with as opposed to having two because mom and dad have to drive to the burbs to work?

People can dream, can't they?

There is plenty of parking in the city for one car a family. The problem is when mom, dad and the kid each have a car.

Actually I was on the FCDC Parking Committee for about 2 years until I was sent to NYC for the 2 week work assignment that I am still on 11 months later. Sadly I will miss all the meetings, but will send someone in my place.
