Local Fairmount residents, in conjunction with Jack’s Firehouse restaurant, will be hosting “Griffin and Alex’s Lemonade Stand”, a fundraiser for pediatric cancer research, on Saturday June 10th between 10:00am and 6:00pm and Sunday, June 11th between 11:00am and 3:00pm at Jack’s Firehouse, 2130 Fairmount Avenue.
Lemonade and home-baked goods will be served. 100% of proceeds will be donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer This local stand is part of “Lemonade Days 2006”, the national fundraising event for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ASLF) and is held in honor of Griffin Smith who was diagnosed in 2005 with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer. He was 2 ½ years old. Since then, he has undergone numerous chemotherapies, surgery to remove his tumor, radiation and two stem cell transplants. Due to his strength and courage, the support of his family, and the tireless help from the doctors and staff at Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania, Griffin celebrated his 3rd birthday in March and in April became a big brother when his Mom gave birth to a baby girl. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is a unique not for profit organization that has evolved from a young patient’s front yard lemonade stand to a nationwide fundraising movement for childhood cancer. This young cancer patient was Alexandra “Alex” Scott. For four years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Alex passed away in 2004. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands have been held across the country to benefit ALSF. To date, her national campaign has raised over 5 million dollars for pediatric research. For more information on Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, visit www.alexslemonade.org. |

On behalf of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and my nephew, Griffin
Smith, thank you for your support of "Griffin and Alex's Lemonade Stand" this past weekend. This local endeavor raised close to $5,000 for childhood cancer research. The support from the neighborhood was tremendous. Griffin's parents were very impressed with the generosity of the community as well as with the number of parents and children who wrote notes of encouragement in a journal or who drew pictures for him. Special thanks to Nancy and Mick Houston and the staff of Jack's Firehouse and to Klein's Supermarket. For more information on Alex's Lemonade Stand, visit www.alexslemonade.org. |
