I submitted a report on the city police's roll call section of the website, for what that's worth. |

I didn't realize there were still problems with 911 until I recently witnessed a violent crime, and when I tried to call 911 the first time, it rang for 1-1/2 minutes. When I called the second time, I got someone who said they couldn't help me unless I knew the specific location (to say it was right in front of the Please Touch Museum on 21st Street seemed to be a stumbling block for them). To have someone act so unhelpful while you're watching and hearing this horrible event was disturbing, and when I tried to find somewhere to report this, I found that I have to either call 911 (like that is fair) OR report it to the police. Ironically, I went to the police station the next day (the one at 21st and Callowhill) and was treated unkindly when I asked on the status of those involved (not names, just statuses). And when I said that it was public information (which is true), they basically looked at me funny and then told me I'd have to come back another time.

A member of the parents' group reports being assaulted last Sunday evening on Parrish between 24th and 25th. The person was approached by a young African-American man, approx. 6 feet tall, dark complection, wearing an "olive drab, hooded, 3/4 length winter jacket...and a black neoprene face mask over his nose and mouth." He ended up striking this person several times on the back of the head with the butt of his gun before fleeing north up Bambrey Street.
Everybody keep their eyes & ears open. Also, Fairmount Townwatch really needs people to step up and come out on patrol. In the winter months sometimes it's a little harder to get motivated to go out, but as you all see, crime does not rest. Please email fairmounttownwatch@hotmail.com if you're interested in participating, and if you're already on our list, please make some time in the next few weeks to join us on patrol one night. You can email the above address to suggest a time to go out. |

Hi, I'm new to phillyblog. all your posts are really interesting and informative.
I just wanted to mention, whilst reading about angelino's i noticed a few comments about the kids who hang around on the corner of 25th & parrish. they have now migrated to hanging around in front of rose's deli. i live on stillman, and last night they were throwing a football around and hitting people's cars on parrish/stillman. thankfully i don't own a car but i know if i did i would have pretty angry. what is to be done? i wanted to say something but no doubt they would have thrown the football at me. i am starting to feel a bit intimidated in leaving/returning to my own house as they hang around and stare at me. what should i do? i feel calling the police is a bit heavy handed. i am a Brit and you only call the police back home in a dire emergency really, but have lived in philly for 3 years now, walter at ellis pharmacy told me to call the police even if people are being noisy in the middle of the night. However, my Brit instincts are still overriden, the old stiff upper lip...grin and bear it.... Sorry, this is turning into a bit of a rant. Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions....i understand the kids dont' really have anywhere to go, but I feel a bit disappointed that pretty much the whole 'hood is pretty peaceful until i approach my own street..... |
