Hi,
This is all about crime in the area, which is very informative since most of these occurances are not on the news. I am buying a house on the edge of Brewerytown and the Art Museum area and someone told us there was a illegal bar open only fri & Sat night from 10pm - 5am, he actually used the term "speak easy" on the corner of 28th and Cambridge St. With crowds of people haging on te corner and on the block. I'm very worried about this if its true and we may not buy the house because it's very close to this. Has anyone heard of this or has seen this bar open. I'm hoping it's not true because the source is a prankster but I'm asking anyway and we are going there Fri night to make sure ourselves. Thanks in advance for any possible info. |

Buy your home. Crime is everywhere. We lived on Newkirk all our lives and helped build this neighborhood of families on perservering with the criminal elements around us. If you don't take a position now, you will never have a place to call your home. You won't be sorry for beginning a life in Fairmount. Soon, your surroundings will consist of only people who want to have a safe neighborhood, and your property will not owe you anything. Stop worrying about incidents such as the speakeasy,if true, the police will catch up with it. And stop worrying about other things like this, problems are everywhere you go, take a walk down to Kelly drive and after you complete the walk, make up your mind. I think you'll buy. Good luck ED.

I would certainly suggest that you go by there at times when there would be such a crowd - late Friday and Saturday nights - and see for yourself. I also agree that if this is still an issue you should concern carefully whether you want to buy there - don't put yourself in an uncomfortable position right from the get-go. A friend of mine who's also a blogger lives down the other end of that block of Cambridge, so I'll see if he can answer the question about whether this place is still in operation.
As for the general crime stuff that happens, Booty's absolutely right. Move in, get to know your neighbors, participate in neighborhood organizations, and you'll be glad you're there. |

Hi All,
Thanks for all your info and advice. I know crime happens anywhere that doesn't bother us and hasn't affected us with the house decision. If we do buy the house we will certainly be active members of the community, town watch and everything. It's mainly the late night bar/club if it does exist that bothers us whether it's legal or illegal because our house if VERY close to it. We just need to make sure that it's not roudy, loud, with crowds hanging on the corner and near our house. And we are going there late at night to check it out we need to see for ourselves. Again we appreciate everyone's info and advice. |
