Are there regular gunshots (more than 4 times a year) that you can hear? Yes
Are there people nearby who will target you community seeing it as good pickings. Both homes and people. Yes
If you left your car on the street, would it get broken into. Yes
Has there been an arson within two blocks of your home. Yes
Is it prudent to get a gun if you live in the area. Yes

That is not a safe area for either a person new to the city or a single female to be in.

Since she is both, I'll stick with my 'No it's not safe'.
you can say the same thing about 29th and brown. would you say the same thing about where you live? probably not. it is always worse on the other side of the fence and that is why this area will struggle. what is the real difference?. there are so many more factors into the consideration of yes, yes, yes. if you move to brewerytown square and never get to know where you live, ignore the community in whuch you live, walk around like the hood is CC, and not try to ,make your neihgborhood a better place (i am talking about both neighborhoods), things will stay the same. you have to be streets smart to live in either hood. tenzo have you ever taken a strole around the developements and got to meet your neighbors. there are some good people who live up here, all over this area.

i would suggest that the previous poster attend this informitive walk through our hood. i also suggest that you tenzo attend.

tenzo and kbyrd are both pretty accurate. as a general proposition, brewerytown just isn't that safe yet, especially for a single female. on the other hand, philadelphia is not only a city of neighborhoods, but a city of blocks; and one's safety can sometimes vary pretty dramatically in just one or two blocks' movement in any direction. in the end, i too would agree with the conclusion that there are better places for a single female to live.

so get a tan, wear some tight jeans wear some kick @ss hoop earrings and move north. i dont see the difference living at 28th parrish and 30th and master. crime is very similar in both areas. there is a shooting at 28th and parrish cause the shooter didnt get any loot and there is a shooting at 30th and master over a drug war. where would you rather live, in a place where you are targeted cause it is assumed that you have money or where the occasional shooting has to do with something that has nothing to do with you.

i guess that i picked the latter

also to nan18. if you are strongly considering moving to the square you should attend the brewerytown cdc meeting next thursday. it is a good way to asses for yourself what it is like. bring your concerns and maybe you will get some answers. i am the guy with the big ears if you want to ask me any questions.

Well, I think the correct answer is, since she is looking for something safe and comfortable, pick neither. It isn't always about "parts of Fairmount or parts of Brewerytown". Sometimes neither is the best recommendation.

Yes I would. There have been three murders nearby and countless thefts, muggings, assaults and even a rape or two. Yesterday at 6:30 in broad daylight there were cops and a helicopter circling the block. When my parents, who live in the Philadelphian, come by for dinner, I insist on driving them home.

Merkin, this isn't about being trendy, diverse, up and coming, a lot of 'cool' people.
She asked a very simple question. Is it safe for a single female from the country.

The answer to that question is No.

merkin - I'm offended by your post. Did you just tell me to "get a tan and some hoop earrings". What in the world is that supposed to mean? I would like to know so be specific, please. What's the attitude about? Do you think a single female from the country would be safe at Brewerytown Condos? She might be, she might not be. Why take that chance? If you are implying that I am some racist who just lives in Fairmount and never takes a look around or doesn't appreciate the history/culture of my neighborhood/surroundings/city you are sadly mistaken. Stop stereotyping - how do you know what color my skin is and what my taste in clothes/jewelry is? Just because I don't feel safe in Brewerytown? After dark I don't feel safe at 29th/28th and Parrish, either. In fact after finding a spot at night I ask someone to walk me home...so NO I don't think Fairmount is perfect, either.

hehe! didnt mean to piss you off. i have felt that people arent so offended up here about the color of their skin and it has made me more lax about my language. sorry i will try to be more PC. its like making a joke about being irish to one of my neighbors.

i seem to "fit in" cause i look muslim " thems your walkin papers around here" my neighbor says. kathy gets some crap, usually when she walks blocks that we dont normally walk. look, it was a joke. i dont know the color of your skin and i really dont care. you shouldnt either. and in that case i would suggeest that the earlier poster not move to the city if they are not ccompfortable. there isnt much difference in crime from area to area. parts of fairmount are safer and parts of brewerytown are safer. i dont have a problem with it. if i told you to get a tattoo and go to an R5 show it wouldnt have been such an issue. there is deep rooted racism in this divide. i am drawn to those who try to make light of the problem.

And in Merkin's defense, I will say he is a very easy going guy and probably meant no offense.
