Event is part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the City of Philadelphia, the Breast Health Institute and Fashion Group International will sponsor a free panel discussion, "Learn and Live: Dispelling the Myths of Breast Cancer," on Monday, October 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Independence Visitors Center, 6th and Arch streets. Panelists will be led by renowned breast cancer surgeon, Gordon F. Schwartz, MD, who is professor of surgery at Jefferson University Medical College.

The panel discussion, followed by a question-and-answer session, will focus on surviving breast cancer and will feature expert medical professionals in mammography, oncology, surgery, radiation, reconstruction, physical therapy.

Panelists include: Lydia T. Komarnicky, MD, Chairman and Professor, Radiation Therapy at the Drexel University School of Medicine; Kevin R. Fox, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and Director of the Rena Rowan Breast Cancer Center; Catherine W. Piccoli, MD, Clinical Associate Professor of Radiology at the Jefferson Medical College, and Director of Breast Imaging; Louis Bucky, MD, Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; Richard DeMaria, Licensed Physical Therapist and President of Dynamic Rehabilitation Services, Inc., and Bonnie Grant, Deputy City Representative, City of Philadelphia.

Grant, a survivor of breast cancer, has been a supporter of awareness and prevention in Philadelphia and has worked with the Breast Health Institute for almost three years.

“With the support of the City of Philadelphia, we are able to continue our efforts and host activities which we hope will be moving and healing,” said Grant, adding: “This could be one of the most important health-related events you will ever attend. If you have been impacted by breast cancer as a patient, caregiver, family member, colleague or friend, please join us for this panel discussion event.”

Grant noted that one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer nationwide, according to annual statistics.

Earlier this month, corporate leaders, sponsors of the Breast Health Institute, the Philadelphia-based Breast Cancer Foundation and think tank, City of Philadelphia officials, and the public participated in the “Give The Shirt Off Your Back” event featuring inspirational speeches by individuals impacted by breast cancer.

Literally hundreds of people gave the shirts off their backs and hung them on a clothesline to symbolize their support for breast cancer survivors and their families at Love Park in Center City, where the park’s fountain water has been dyed pink in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month observed nationally in October. The shirts included messages of inspiration, love and remembrance, honoring those who have been impacted by breast cancer.

Refreshments will be served for the "Dispelling the Myths of Breast Cancer," event. To RSVP or for more information, call (215) 732-2300.

The Breast Health Institute is dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer through funding research. BHI funds a semi-annual Consensus Conference in Philadelphia, hosting breast cancer specialists from around the globe. For more information, contact the Breast Health Institute at (215) 732-2300.
