atom and his package - philadelphia

I sit at rittenhouse park and see a guy from time
cycle give the finger to a passing motorist and it kind of makes me smile
this is the city of brotherly love and crime
and we only bombed our own city once, one time
I'll show you around the city and where you can't go after dark
and if skating's your thing I'll show you where you cannot skate in LOVE park
the dialer doesn't work on any of our phones but here's the place that we call our home
philly's the place where the mummers are weird and I do not think the Phillies have won
in years I begged Mayor Rendell and the cops on the street
to have mercy on me and Jen and please blow up South Street
Philadelphia, get to know us
Philadelphia, get to know us
the Philadelphia party can go **** its own face
and yeah sure we got our problems in dealing with race
the statue of William Penn ... sitting all ...
well he's kind of a loner if you look at it from the right angle it looks like he has a boner
Philly's the place where the mummers are weird and i do not think the Sixers have won
in years I begged Mayor Rendell and the cops on the beat
to have mercy on me and Jen and please blow up South Street
Philadelphia, get to know us
Philadelphia, get to know us
hey Brian, did you know Cinderrella's from Philadelphia,
and we have uh Independence Hall here too yeah
but we also got Frank Rizzo and Delaware Avenue YEAH!
Philadelphia, get to know us

The G-Love song mentioned earlier is I-76 off of Yeah, It's That Easy.

Other G-Love songs with direct reference:
Dreams from Philadelphonic "Just a Philly kid from South 2 St."
Rodeo Clowns from Philadelphonic "comin' at you live out here from California even tho' I'm Philly born and bred"
Shootin' Hoops from self-titled "At Seger Park..."
Cold Beverage from self-titled "Wawa's to the right, they got beverages inside"
Probably more that I'm blanking on...

A few Cali songs:
Free-fallin' by Tom Petty
Grace Cathedral Park by Red House Painters
Strawberry Hill by Red House Painters
Southend by the Sea by Mark Eitzel
Some Bartenders Have the Gift of Pardon by Mark Eitzel
Mission Rock Resort by Mark Eitzel
I Remember California by REM
and one of my favorites...
Unfair by Pavement

just about anything by the dead milkmen, especially Punk Rock Girl, Bitchin Camaro, & Nutrition cause they name places

Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now -- was the theme song for like EVERY philly sports team while I was growing up

Basketball by Kurtis Blow -- talks about Dr. J and other 76ers from the 80s

G-Love & Special Sauce -- he has a song called I-76, it's pretty funny and not bad.

Hall & Oates, always good for a laugh

Magazine - Philadelphia - good postpunk song!

And of course, Philadelphia Freedom!

also, Josh Wink is from Philly if ya like techno... he did a nice song with that overhyped then disappearing band the Interpreters on one album called "Simple Man" which is fab.

and then of course the locals that are somewhat well known in indie & punk circles ... not to mention any of the obscure ones that we only know...
Lilys
Stinking Lizaveta
Beretta 76
Joey Sweeney
etc. ad infinitum

That song is by a group called American Dream, not Hall & Oates.

Thumbs up On the same task!

Hey, I am working on the same compilation of Philly songs and wanted to know if you completed it. What did you end up with once you reviewed all the input?

I had planned the obvious, Rocky theme, the two songs from the Philadelphia soundtrack by Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen, and then Philadelphia Freedom by Elton John.

After reviewing all the postings, I was encouraged by the overwelming support and recalled some of the suggestions.

If you finished, I would love to get a copy as well. Let me know.

Thanks,

Phil
