see, Gmonkey, i wasn't a big fan of Born Standing Up. I was bored with it. ShopGirl, on the other hand, was good.
More recently, I read and adored The Tender Bar by JR Moehringer - a beautifully written memoir. Also just finished Until I Find You by John Irving. Could be my favorite Irving ever. As always, he left me missing the characters when the book finished. I wanted more, and it was already 890 pages , roughly...and like size 10 font. I was just given The Moviegoer by a good pal and look forward to giving it some attention.

...I'm currently reading (well, starting to read) Pillars of the Earth, the book Oprah chose as her darling of the year. So far I find it somewhat plodding, but should pick up in the next 100 pages or so---its about 970 pages, so 100 is no big deal.

I'll have to check out the John Irving book. I also want to read Richard Russo's most recent, which I haven't had the chance to pick up, yet.

I'm going to try and read all the books suggested here in the order that they were posted...except for maybe the political book, sorry Adam! haha. Let's see how many I get through. Quote:

Tom Robbins: Oh my god, the first book I read by him was Still Life With Woodpecker while I was a sophmore in college. I couldn't believe it. It totally influenced me, too, and I actually went out to buy a pack of camel cigarettes to study them while I was reading the book. Then when I finished I needed more of him and bought every book he had written to date. His last 2-3 books weren't my faves though. I should reread SLWW or Jitterbug Perfume. |

Haha! And I bought those Camels in order to smoke them while reading Still Life!

My introduction to William Gibson came from an ex boyfriend. He started me out on Mona Lisa Overdrive and Neuromancer and I thought they were great but I really can't remember much from them (probably because I blocked it out after we split, haha) although I know they left a big impression on me in a visual/imagery sense. |
