Default What Newspapers do Phillyblog participants read?

I'm wondering the types of news sources that participants of the blog read.

What are some reasons why or why not to read certain papers?

I used frequent flyer miles to get a free subscription to the WSJ but I'm tired of reading it - it is a daily mental workout to get through it - but once you get to know where things are that you care about, you skip the parts you don't want to read. The editorial content is often to the right of my politics, but I am sometimes persuaded and their arguments are always well presented.

The NYT has credibility issues lately, with that one journalist who falsified almost every story he wrote, a former editor spilling his guts in the Atlantic Monthly about all of the flaws in their organization, and now renewed criticisms of their overblowing the stories leading up to the Iraq war. I don't read the NYT much, except a rare Sunday when I have a few hours to be absorbed in it.

I think the Philly Inq is a breeze to read, the articles don't carry any intellectual weight, and it's editorial page is pretty weak. Plus I couldn't care less about Philly's sports until the playoffs, and only then when our teams make it to later rounds.

Philly Daily News - sports is only time I pick it up, unless I want to read it while in transit.

Other papers I mentioned I read even less frequently...

I read largely the Daily News and City Paper. God I love the City Paper. A liberal paper with smut in the back. It's an anti-Republican hornball single man's dream paper.

In decreasing order of scope: Sunday Times, Daily Inky, City Paper, Philly Weekly, Philadelphia Independent, Art Museum Area Home News or whatever it's called now.

Anybody remember the Philadelphia Forum, Dan Rottenberg's paper of maybe 6-7 years ago? I really enjoyed that. But the Independent's a fun read as well.

I mostly read news stories on the internet--Phila Inq. website, Yahoo and MSN news (various papers and sources), and the tv/radio sites (nbc10 or kyw1060). I like the CityPaper all right but I'm always forgetting to pick it up. Usually I'll read the Metro that someone left on a bus seat but I rarely grab it myself.

I'm with el ... I'd need the abililty to select multiples.

I read local news online, so I have no sense of branding between the Daily News or the Inky in the online environment - I read all the Phillies coverage, local politics. I get the international news from CNN. For business and cultural stuff, I read WSJ, NYT, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Sports Illustrated and all of the media trades that have free newsletters - all online. I also look at MSNBC and get the newsletters from all of their evening shows, so I know what they're all talking about.

I pick up Phila Weekly every week and page through, but I dont' always truly read it. Same with City Paper. I thnk they're great publications, but sometimes a little edgy for my taste.

The only paper mags I get these days are The New Yorker and Philadelphia Mag (just started my sub up again).

Do the polls on this forum come with the capability to allow multiple selections? Maybe I should have put some other options, inluding all of the above, or multiple of the above.

I was mainly aiming to see if any papers stand out as favorites of people using this site. There are others that could go in the list like Philadelphia Business Journal, etc.

Inquirer is delivered and read, Daily News is often picked up (it's great for the bus). Times on Sunday (while it's had problems of late, it is still the finest newspaper in the world and someone who read it every day would be truly educated).

Always pick up and generally read City Paper and PW (Phladelphia Weekly, Welcomat). When I see it, I will pick up Weekly Press but since Bob Christian has cut back on the honor boxes, it is hard to find.

Also news from WaPo and LA Times web sites as well as MSNBC and Yahoo and Google News.

Obviously, I'm a news junkie.

I try and avoid local TV news although I've been watching it more in the morning since I moved over to Overbrook Farms (time to watch it for a change). Eveningtime - Lehrer News Hour, Charlie Rose and Nightline.

Also, lately have watched PCN more - not too bad if you care about what's going on in Harrisburg.

True that - PCN is terrific, no lie. I've happened by some interesting debates of late there, too. Can't leave out an occassional seminar or book discussion on CSPAN either ...

I like CN8's talk line-up at night, as well, and Lou Tilley's show is great. One of my friends is a regular commentator from Boston that they pull in for some of their discussions.
