Well, as far as her voice goes, I just don't care for it. I'm really not a fan of the style as a whole, I never cared for R&B or anything closely resembling it. OLD soul - Marvin Gaye and stuff, I can get down on that. But this new crap? Nope.

in no particular order :

LCD Soundsystem > Vampire Wknd > Yeasayer > Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings > My Morning Jacket > RJD2 > The Bees > Mark Ronson > Thievery Corp

New Jack Swing could have been the salvation of R&B (and "soul," which you appear to define exclusively as "Motown," is definitely a flavor of R&B; its other main '60s flavor was Memphis, and there were also niche flavors like New Orleans R&B), but it drowned under a wave of hip-hop.

All I can say is "somethin' somethin' just ain't right."

Sandy - EXACTLY. It just feels to me like hip hop is permeating everything, and in my opinion, hip hop has been nothing special for a really long time now. The latest incarnation of R&B is way too hh-infused for me to even be able to stomach it.

Phillyrudeboy - my best friend sent me a link to one of Vampire Weekend's videos, and I just got around to listening to them the other day. I really like them.

I feel ya, arlee.

You might be surprised to hear what some -- okay, make that a few -- hip-hop pioneers have been up to lately, though.

In particular, I suggest you check out Queen Latifah's The Dana Owens Album if you haven't heard it.

Good find...I might pick it up.

I'm listening to Siouxsie's new album. I found out about an hour too late that she was playing in new york this weekend.

One of the greatest albums in existence, in my opinion at least.
