I was thinking about posting this in the classifieds forum or at craigslist... but last time I got rid of stuff using craigslist in LA it wasn't worth the number of weird phone calls I received.

I'm trying to get rid of this TV:

- 36" Toshiba CRT about 8 years old
- stand included
- Front volume/channel controls are smashed in
- Remote still works for turning TV on/off, channels, etc
- Sound is completely broken
- Picture is perfect, TV was hardly used
- No scratches on the actual screen
- weighs 207 LBS

One of my movers going from PA to LA smashed the front of it, so I'm assuming that's what broke the sound as well. The TV still functions perfectly if you have speakers for it.

I live at 13th and Arch Street in CC, so I don't think putting it on the street is a good idea. Then again, I guess it could be gone in seconds with the amount of traffic here. The main problem is that the TV weighs 207 LBS... I'd be lucky if I could get it out of my building without help.

Does anyone know of a repair TV person who would take it for free? Or does philly have a spring cleaning bulk trash pickup program? I'm kind of looking for any type of service that doesn't require me to post my phone number on a site and then wait for random people to call me.

The TV's obviously worth at least something... just broken sound and small dents on the front control panel... so I'd prefer not to have to pay someone to trash it.

You can call or email the Streets department and they will pick it up on your regular trash day. They are pretty good about getting the stuff but try and give them a few days notice.

Awesome.. thanks. "Rubbish" day is Wednesday.. maybe I'll try a quick craigslist ad to see if anyone wants it before I trash it. I feel bad trashing it.. even though I hate craigslist... Thanks again.

There are "professional" scrappers in this city. They know the trash schedule and drive down the streets the night before, looking for goodies. I saw two trucks out on my block last night. I imagine if you put the TV out on regular trash day, they will scoop it up in no time. I had an exhaust pipe and a computer taken from my trash pile. Hopefully, they made some money and put them to good use.

I have been thinking about this as well. With the arrival of HD soon, and everyone buying flatscreens, who is going to buy or even want my old heavy "flat screen via heavy glass lens" tv ? The trash day idea sounds good. Either the scrappers get it (and i feel like i am doing a good deed) or the trashguys get it.

Do any charities here in Philly take broken appliances and TVs and such to fix them? I know that exists in some other places, but I've never heard of any here. I have an old TV with a bad picture tube just sitting in storage that I'd love to donate to someone who could fix it and either sell it in a charity-run store or give it to someone in need.

Check out Yahoo Group's freecycle group, or you can post on craigslist. Costs nothing to post your garbage and it's better going to someone than the landfill.

1) The set is EIGHT YEARS old.... it's seen it's useful life, time to bury it.
2) The damage to the front controls/sound would cost more than it's worth, and no telling if there's an electrical safety issue that might cause a disaster..... time to bury it.
3) Digital tv is here now, and even though a converter prolongs older sets usefulness......time to bury it.
4) I'm a tv repairman, take my advice.
