I could spend hours just watching people walk by. You may think that it is weird, but to me weird is paying big $ to watch overpaid crybabies play with a ball, or sitting in front of a TV and watching the drivel on TV. Just looking at the body forms, the gait, the facial expressions, of people is fascinating. I hope that I don't look as ridiculous as some people. On the other hand, some people are quite poised and beautiful.

I live close by and sit in the park relaxing for a half hour maybe 5 or 6 times per year (usually in the spring and fall) If you saw me on one of those rare ocassions it doesn't mean I am there all day every day. That would be boring. Multiply me by 20,000 people and well there you go.

When I lived in the neighborhood, I used to do that all the time. I didn't think of the square as a park, in those days, though. To me, it was more like a big front yard. When you think of the square as, "your place," your attitude to it really changes.

Like many people including myself, after sitting in front of a computer 40 hours a week, there's nothing better than just sitting in a park surrounded by trees, enjoying the weather and absorbing the social activity taking place. It's no different than someone sitting on their front porch watching people walk by. Sometimes you sit there for an hour just watching people, watching cars, looking around at the buildings, all by yourself, and sometimes you bump into friends. I don't know what kind of asocial character doesn't understand the pleasure derived from alone time, silently enjoying a sunny Sunday afternoon in the park, particularly after what most of us office-drones endure week after week. If someone doing absolutely nothing in a public park is of genuine concern for you, you might want to ask yourself if the city life is right for you and consider moving to the suburbs.
