Default N. Broad and Spring Garden, Safe?

Hey all,

My wife and I are moving to Philly this summer for school. We just signed a lease for an apartment at North Broad and Spring Garden Street. Would you all consider this a relatively safe part of town? We are in Boston right now and we visited the area to see the apartment and thought it looked like a nice area. Not much we can do now since we already signed the lease, I just thought it would be nice to see what all of the locals think of the area. Thanks.

Dirty and very busy, and safe.

Pretty vibrant office district during the day...CCP probably adds a lot of traffic, I've taken the subway station at night and never had any trouble (though I am quite intimidating ).

I like the area, it should be a good choice. Where're you going to be going to school/moving from?

Chasing Foxes, I'm going to UPenn; Will likely be riding my bike or taking the subway every day to get there. We're moving from Boston, Mass. The place did look like an office-y area but we both thought it was a good fit for what we were hoping to find. What is CCP?

FOP = Fraternal Order of Police. They have a center there on the east side of Broad, on SprinGarden, where they hold events, drink, etc.

I live two blocks from where you are moving. It's safe. Living near the subway is great. And it's only a 6/7 block walk to center city or the shops on Fairmount avenue.

Just use your normal city-living street smarts. Also, I wouldn't take the BSL past 9PM but I may be over cautious.

CCP is the Community College of Philadelphia, three blocks west of you at 17th & Spring Garden. A few blocks north (at 640 N. Broad) is a swanky Italian restaurant called Osteria that you probably wouldn't expect to find in that part of town. A few blocks northwest of you, at 17th & Green, is a new Irish pub called St. Stephen's Green. Nice place.

I am not aware of any residential buildings at Broad and Spring Garden. Are you perhaps at the Colonade condo two blocks to the west? West of Broad Spring Garden isn't bad and gets better as you go west. East of Broad it's kind of grim and doesn't get better as you go east. North of Spring Garden on Broad is a public High School (not a good thing) South on Broad is a little better. That intersection will never win "Best of Philly" although the modernistic highrise office building on the southwest corner was just sold to a developer who wants to convert it to lux condos. (he's crazy IMO)
