The turth is that every major city has its fair share of problems. Almost all the violent crime in this city is between two people who know each other.
There are dangerous areas where you need to be aware of your surroundings, but In living here all my life, I have only had an one dangerous incident, and me being out at 4 in the morning didn't help the situation.

Before anyone comes in here and is all like "Yeah Philly is safe -- just make sure to avoid X and Y area at X and Y time of day and you're going to be fine!!", you're basically conceding to the fact that Philly is dangerous. Especially for a foreign exchange student who knows little of American city life.
I saved you guys the trouble, thanks. |

NYC is just as "dangerous" they just push the crime outside of thier city limits. Philly and NYC aren't close enough (100 Miles) Most of the crime in Philadelphia is concentrated in poor african american areas of the city. Sadly...so are most of our colleges...Penn, Drexel and Temple all border poor black neighborhoods.

It's too tall..! it ruins the feel of the city..! It casts massive shadows..! It's an architectural nightmare..! We should stand together and fight this monstrosity that threatens our homes..! ...but amazingly no one tore down the Eiffel Tower. or.. why we shouldn't always listen to "neighborhood groups" and critics. |

Violent crime is rising in every city in the USA...Americans are violent people. If you stay away from high drug traffic areas, you will be fine. Stay away from conflict with others and you will be fine. One only has to look at the crime spikes in DC and Chicago this year to understand this.

Yeah.
chandler: are you coming to Philly for school? What school? If you're going to Penn/Drexel (they are located next to one another), never travel past 30th Street (Drexel part) or 40th Street (Penn part). Just stay on campus. If you're going to Temple, stay on Broad Street. LaSalle, uh good luck. |

chandler - Philadelphia is not an especially dangerous American city. There are certainly some more dangerous neighborhoods, but it's not something that should cause you to change your plans from coming here. It's something that all Americans learn to deal with.

In Chinese cities aren't there any neighborhoods where thugs and criminals live? In all US cities there are areas like that. If you don't go to that part of the city you are fine.
This is where I live. I don't know anyone with a gun except police. ![]() ![]() ![]()
