Wow Zete your so right, why would I ever want to live in the city?

There's no reason to debate with anyone over the suburbs vs the city. If you are happy in your suburb good for you. But four words cannot possibly paint a complete picture of Philadelphia.

I forgot to mention that another thing that makes Philly safer than China is your reduced likelihood of getting crushed by buildings here as we have strict building codes.

Did you mean the earthquake happens in china?
No offence, but i think the buildings in USA can not afford such big earthquake either.

It was a stupid remark. We do have building codes, sometimes strict ones, but I doubt very much Philadelphia's were put in place to withstand earthquakes like the tragic one in China.

2006: 316 robberies in the 19103 and 19107 zip codes, and those are just two of Center City's zip codes. There's the statistics you guys were asking for. So much for violent crime being rare in Center City. Like I said... you don't hear about it b/c it happens so often that it's not newsworthy.

That statement is so wrong, even beyond the gross insensitivity to the tragedy in the original poster's homeland.

Philadelphia building codes aren't so stringent as those in California in terms of earthquake resistant engineering. A 7.9 quake centered in Center City would not leave much standing. We are fortunate that the fault lines in our region are more settled and stable, or at least the geologists think that's the case.

Philadelphia was founded in 1682. To the best of my knowledge there has never been a single natural disaster in this city since then. No cyclones, no tidal waves, no hurricanes, no earthquakes, et cetera. There has been flooding due to tropical storms, but nothing on the scale of what I would call a natural disaster.

In other countries (Korea and Egypt come to mind) one regularly hears stories about unsavory builders building buildings too tall for their foundations / structures, which then collapse and pin people inside of them. When was the last time that happened in Philadelphia?

In the USA, when a house is built in a hurricane zone, it needs to be built to withstand hurricanes. When a house is built in an earthquake zone, it needs to be built to withstand earthquakes. What happened in China? Did an earthquake occur in an area where earthquakes have never occurred?
